[Release] Aeroglyph: Turn your Glyph Interface into a Weather Station

Hey Nothing Community,
I have developed a new utility to maximize the potential of the Nothing Phone (3) Glyph Matrix Display.

Meet Aeroglyph.

It transforms the back of your phone into an ambient weather station. No unlocking. No scrolling. It allows you to visualize your surrounding weather at a glance, right on the back of your phone. It uses the Dot Matrix display to render real-time conditions (Clear, Cloudy, Rain, Snow, Mist) in that native, retro-futuristic style.

The Concept: I wanted to create a “Glyph Toy” that actually serves a purpose. Aeroglyph pulls local weather data and renders it on the Dot Matrix Display on the back of the phone. Ideally, you can leave your phone face-down and still know if it’s raining.

Features:

Matrix Weather Sync: Dot patterns for Clear, Rain, Clouds, Snow, and Mist, designed specifically for the Dot Matrix layout.
Real-Time Data: Accurate, hyper-local current weather conditions.
Glyph Toy Mode: Interact directly with the Matrix Display—tap to trigger the current weather condition icon or temperature and show off the hardware.
Minimalist Design: A clean, monochrome UI that seamlessly blends with Nothing OS.
Privacy First: Location data is processed only to fetch weather and is never stored, tracked, or shared.

Compatibility: Exclusively for Nothing Phone (3) (Glyph Matrix Display required).

Since this is pre-Play Store, I have uploaded the APK to GitHub Releases.
Try it out and Break it (so I can Fix it!).

Prerequisites & Configurations:
1. Enable Location Access (To know the Location from current weather data is to fetched)
2. Enable Internet Access (To fetch the current weather data of your location from Internet)

There are other factors, which might still hinder the glyph toy’s functionality, thus you must configure them for seamless usage,
1. Disable Manage app if unused
2. Enable Background Data in Mobile Data and Wi-Fi
3. Enable Allow background usage from App battery usage & Check Unrestricted

I installed it but when I tried to open it, Google Play blocks it and tells me to download the app from there. But it obviously isn’t available yet 😅

DiegoP_ As it’s in Internal & Closed Testing (alpha) phase, you might not be able to view the app, You might have to join as a Tester,

Hi Djprogram & .noir.
I do understand your pain point & I appreciate your reply, What you see briefly flashing with something that seems a cloud represents that your weather is currently Cloudy, I have used the weather icons similar to Nothing’s Weather App/Widget weather dot matrix icon & this is just my first release, app is still in alpha testing phase, better designs for weather icons could be adopted in future releases with options to choose between icon packs which is in pipeline, also thanks for your inputs on this.
The switch between temperature & weather icon is triggered by long pressing the capacitive touch sensor.
The Initial Scope is defined to represent the weather through glyph interface.
This glyph toy contains 2 pages as of now, weather icon page & temperature page, in future releases, such pages might get added providing users more features to play around with.

I see that your facing some issues in providing necessary permissions,
I can sort that out, there are some prerequisites for this glyph toy to function as intended, those are as follows,
1. Location (To know the Location from current weather data is to fetched)
2. Internet Access (To fetch the current weather data of your location from Internet)

You can also configure Aeroglyph Weather Glyph Toy as an Always On Glyph Toy,
You could visually see that the weather data gets updated automatically as the actual weather changes.
You could also refer to the video for configuring the Glyph Toy with recommended configurations,

PoorneshAdhithya Hi, thanks for the very thorough reply. I figured out what my mistake was; I simply hadn’t joined the testing group, which meant the app wasn’t showing up on the Play Store and was giving me these errors. Now everything works perfectly.

I don’t have any suggestions for now, especially since, as you said, the app is still in its infancy, but it looks promising! Keep up the good work, and thanks!

I agree, it would actually be much easier for Nothing to build this since they already have AccuWeather integration. I suspect they want to keep Glyph Toys working offline with zero permissions, which is probably why they decided not to include a weather one.

PoorneshAdhithya Good point, that makes sense. Do you plan to release this on the Play Store eventually so that it will update automatically if you make changes?

UpawNothing Currently, the app is in alpha testing on the Play Store and will be published once the Google Play Console process is complete. As this is my first Android application, I’m learning a lot! I plan to open-source the Figma designs soon, followed by the code under a permissive license to encourage community contributions.

Looks really good 👍 I wanted that functionality since I had my phone (3). I thought about adding a weather toy to dot hub but couldn’t figure out how to get the data without using an API. I wanted Dot Hub to be offline only.
