Hello everyone, I’m just writing this review out of general appreciation and interest for essential space. Essential space might be the first feature that nothing has introduced that I’d actually consider a lock-in for me. The equivalent of the apple walled garden.
How?
I’m gonna preface this by stating that I’m sort of a scatter brain.
my mind goes a hundred different directions a minute. So, leaving a voice memo or quickly leaving a text with the essential key to remind me of something later has become second nature to me.
Furthermore, now that nothing has managed to link the essential space with google calendar, it’s become all the more useful since i can mention, say an event that i need to attend to, and it just shows up on my schedule.
But what really impressed me and grew my affinity for the app, is when i attended a meeting.
I’m a student pilot and i recently visited a flight school to discuss their brochure, fleet, instructors, cost breakdown etc.
This is the image that sits with me today and what I’d like you to imagine.
I attended the meeting with my dad. He carried a set of papers, a pen and got ready to start jotting down everything the employee was mentioning;
I took out my phone, set it down on the table and just activated the essential recorder. I didn’t even plan to use it but my mind remembered that i had the feature and so i may as well use it right?
fast forward an hour, my dad has a page of a few key points
and I have the entire meeting summarised, with key points and an option to listen to the recording again for future reference. Not just that, i have the option to forward the summary as a pdf. It seems simple enough and for people that haven’t or won’t ever be in a situation where they need to use it, this feature may seem trivial.
But just that picture, of my dad having all this elaborate material, and me having “nothing” but my phone (yes I’m hilarious i know),
In that moment, I understood the potential and the idea that nothing has been trying to sell. I was able to be fully present in that meeting, reassured that i won’t have missed out on anything since everything was being recorded.
I see a lot of posts berating nothing for introducing the essential key, about how people unintentionally activate it, or how they don’t actually see any use for it and quite frankly, to each their own.
You may not be the kind of person that needs features like this but since I am, I figured that I’d share my perspective on it.
I’m not particularly fond of how AI has become so prevalent in our day to day lives, but this might be the first sitch in which i find it being, actually useful.
The only feature I’d like them to include is the ability to somehow view the essential space on my laptop and I’m aware that this demand has been made before but I’d highly appreciate it if they bring that idea to life.
