Let’s be honest: look at the smartphones of 2026. If you cover the logo, they almost all look identical. A flat glass sandwich, a metal frame, and the same repetitive colors. Innovation is happening in the spec sheets, but it’s stalled in our hands. Design has become stagnant.
Since Nothing stands for challenging the status quo, I’ve been thinking about the next evolution of haptics. I truly believe we need to move away from flashy colors and focus on textures. A unique texture automatically feels more premium and sophisticated without the need for loud, distracting finishes. It’s about how it feels in your palm, not just how it looks on a shelf.
Here are three material directions I’d love to see:
1. Micro-Engineered Precision
Think of surfaces with micro-engravings, as fine as the knurling on a high-end camera lens or a precision tool. It provides incredible grip, diffuses light in a soft, matte way, and makes fingerprints a thing of the past. It’s engineering you can actually feel.
2. Organic Depth (Natural Touch)
Materials that feel “warm” and grounded—like the tactile sensation of brushed stone or fine sand. This makes the smartphone feel less like a cold piece of tech and more like a personal, natural accessory.
3. Vegan Leather (Premium Haptics)
High-quality vegan leather would be a game-changer. It’s soft, durable, and gives the device an instant “lifestyle” aura. It ages with character and offers a much more comfortable, secure grip than cold, slippery glass.
What do you think? Is it time to ditch the “smooth glass” era for something with more soul? Which of these textures would you want to feel on a future Nothing phone
