I am extremely confused .Here in Europe, a new law is coming into force concerning consumer rights. Essentially, it stipulates that electrical appliances must be repairable even after the warranty has expired. This goes so far that Nothing must provide spare parts and even tools years after a product is no longer manufactured. So save resources and replace the battery when it dies instead of throwing away the phone altogether.

The law is already in force in Germany.

derDennis Soon this law will be valid across all European countries, but it will apply only to devices manufactured after it comes into force (Nothing will also have to comply with these requirements.).

You won’t always have a specialized repair center nearby, so in addition to the repair cost you’ll also have to factor in shipping fees.

This might still be worthwhile for a mid‑range or high‑end device, but it would definitely be disadvantageous for an entry‑level product.

Sirius_EU As I understand it, this applies retroactively to older devices. My A2 should still be covered by that, for example, if the battery fails. The only question is where will I get the spare parts or tools from? Does Nothing provide, or will provide, its own store for this?

“Consumers can directly consult the websites of manufacturers and repairers to compare costs, services, and terms offered. Furthermore, by July 31, 2027, the European Commission must launch an online platform dedicated to repairs, with a specific section for each Member State. Access will be free and will make it easier to locate repairers, sellers of refurbished products, and operators who purchase defective goods for recovery.”

I believe it’s too early to see the real effects of this law.

Sirius_EU TBH, this policy is heavily needed in the UK, where people often throw away 1-3yr old Android Phones that have life left in them, and usually resell value for used Android phones in the UK is poor compared to iPhones. It would help Android phones keep their value at the same rate as iPhones, making iPhones less valuable for longevity. It would also help to boost eco-friendly practices where phones are no longer discarded because the battery has died.

Most Androids become discontinued after 2-3yrs since launch, and then resell places such as CeX, Vinted, Musicmagpie and Argos/Amazon/Tesco Mobile trade in give little to no money for a £500 midrange phone that released 3 years ago.

Sirius_EU I meant I wish the UK government would introduce this policy. I know this policy does not affect the UK as the UK is not in the EU currently.

Mr Steel 🦾 The website is all well and good, but unfortunately there’s nothing for my 2a. And yet the 2a is a very good device. That’s why it’s doubly annoying that there’s no help available on the site.

derDennis I believe that in 2024 this “repair and spare parts” program wasn’t planned, so the 2a ended up being excluded (no stock of spare parts was produced).

The ‘thing’ with Android Phones is: all Android Phones are somekind Frankensteins out of 3rd Party parts. with everyone runs the same OS also made by a 3rd Party Company. From logic every Ultraphone of every Company in one lifecycle should have the same parts inside since everyone is just buying the same (in Ultraphones the best ones currently on the market) parts. And since everyone is selling anotherones parts in their own package (the Phonehousing) we come to a weird Situation where everyone is forced to buy a very good amount of Parts extra to sell them just in case to keep all those random parts from 100 3rd Parties “repaieable” 😂
