Nothing’s policy on updates is dictated by EU law now.

The fact an inferior phone spec wise is getting the update doesn’t matter, it’s within it’s lifecycle and not for the life cycle of the phone 2.

Nothing has no financial reason to update phone 2, regardless of engineering team size, and no EU law to hold them to it.

It was worth asking the question and raising awareness, regardless of what is posted by people defending companies like they owe them a living. Some people will skip the step that security updates will continue until around this time next year and just go straight to getting rid. Who wants to see yet more things put on the scrap heap and yet more disposable tech in the world. Even if the answer is no, it was still worth the ask. This is the spirit of the EU law in the first place. To prevent tech that can still be used getting prematurely sent to the dump.

I personally switched from OnePlus because they became a commercial brand years ago. And the whole bootloader/kernel situation is another thing. After OP 9, OP 11 was basically the last unicorn. Someone found and leaked the kernel sources, so the community was at least able to build custom ROMs for it. After that, we got like 5 more OP editions and they’re all locked down.

Once the support period is over, you’re basically left with either exchanging the phone or just keeping it as it is. And they’re selling these phones at basically flagship prices now.

If you compared Nothing with Pixel, then yeah, I’d understand the argument. Pixel gets longer support and you can actually flash/customize the device. But then you’re trading off some hardware/value.

But you picked OnePlus for this argument 💀 That’s kinda a losing statement, my guy.

Nothing Phone 2 and OP 11 came out around the same time, and both got Android updates up to Android 16. OP 11 was also more expensive. So I genuinely don’t know where this “OnePlus is superior because they actually give updates” thing is coming from.

And I’m not even blindly defending Nothing lol. I’ll probably switch to Pixel after my experience with 3a pro, especially because this whole bloatware situation is annoying (I’ll flash some custom ROM and use it as a secondary device for a few more years)

Mr Steel 🦾 Nothing has fulfilled its promised support policy, but this still creates a bad impression for the brand. People expect a premium flagship to receive at least the same level of major software support as a cheaper phone from the same generation—not less. It’s hard to imagine Samsung or Apple supporting their base model for longer than their Pro/Ultra model. Phone (2) owners aren’t asking because the promise was broken; they’re asking because this outcome makes buying the more expensive flagship feel like the worse long-term choice.

It also raises a bigger question for future buyers: if a Nothing Phone (4) or Phone (5) launches next year, why should someone buy the more expensive flagship immediately? They might simply wait for the cheaper 5a, pay less, and potentially get one more Android version because of the launch timing. That makes the cheaper A-series phone look like the better long-term investment.

OutsideTheHypeZ3 You’re comparing Nothing, a very damn young company that’s barely a few years old compares to Samsung and Apple, companies that have been established for decades with massive engineering teams, resources, and mature software infrastructure. Even those huge companies historically didn’t just extend major Android/OS support beyond what they originally promised every time users demanded another year. Android being open-source doesn’t mean updates are free. The real cost is the engineering, testing, optimization, certification, bug fixing, and continued maintenance required to actually bring that Android version to an older device., those other companies can absorb those costs far more easily, but for a company the size of Nothing, repeatedly adding unplanned years of support across older devices can become a massive resource drain. Nothing fulfilled what they promised for Phone (2). Should they promise longer support for future flagships? Absolutely yea .But comparing Nothing’s current support capability to those giants “they can do it, so Nothing should too” completely ignores the difference in scale. just live with it.

The Phone (3) has 5 major OS versions, so its successor will follow the same path (or get 1-2 more). The (*a) models have 3 major OS versions.

Or, in other words, the Phone (3) launched in July 2025 with Android 15. It will reach Android 20 in about September/October 2029.

You would need to buy a Phone (5a), which will launch with Android 17 in 2027, just to match that Android 20 update on the Phone (3) and receive its final major OS update, so the Android 20, in about October 2029. That’s “simply waiting” from July 2025 to March 2027 only to break even on the current Nothing’s flagship 😀

Also, as bein said, you are comparing two of the biggest phone makers and sellers in the world with one of the smallest. Take Apple here:

Their current market cap is USD 4.745 trillion, Nothing doesn’t even have one, but they’re estimated to be worth USD 1.3 billion. So Apple is literally 3,650 times as large. Do they offer a 3,650 times longer update policy, equal to 18,250 years (over the Phone (3) and its 5 years)? I mean, if we go by your logic of comparison… 🤷‍♂️

Edit: To put things into perspective, Apple sells more iPhone 17 models in 24 hours than Nothing sells across all of their phones in 8,760 hours (aka 365 days):

I used them as a reference because Nothing itself positions its flagship products in the premium space and has repeatedly compared itself with Apple. The direction from Phone (1) to Phone (2) and Phone (3) also makes that clear.

Being a smaller company explains its limitations, but it doesn’t make every decision immune from criticism. And honestly, we all know Nothing will probably not give Phone (2) another major update. We’re not ordering the company to do anything or claiming they owe us Android 17. We’re simply sharing our disappointment and asking them to reconsider. That’s what a community is supposed to do.

The comparison was about product positioning and consumer expectations, not market-cap mathematics. Nothing itself positions its flagship in the premium market and constantly compares its products with Apple. So pretending that Apple can never be used as a reference because it’s bigger is equally ridiculous.

And Apple’s daily sales numbers have absolutely nothing to do with the actual discussion. We’re talking about one specific outcome: a former Nothing flagship stopping one Android version before another phone from the same generation.

You can defend Nothing’s decision—that’s fine. But throwing Apple’s market cap, sales figures and imaginary “18,250 years of updates” into the discussion doesn’t actually address the point. It just avoids it.

I have both Phone (2) and Phone (2a), and I’ve personally seen both devices receiving updates on the same release cycle. That is what made me curious about the OS 5.0 situation and why I joined the discussion. I shared my opinion in the community post- nothing more. You clearly disagree, and that’s fine, but I’m done repeating the same point.

What’s the purpose of 3 years of updates and whole team of devs and other highly paid staffs working just to keep the camera trash as trash , despite having IMX 890 as the primary sensor ?

When essential widgets are announced , they gatekept phone (2) and other devices ,by just giving only 2 essential widgets to be used , Promising that it will be extended in the future updates , and now ? End of life ? So am I going to be stuck at just 2 essential widgets forever ? If it is not going to be done ? Why making promises ?

No, absolutely not. Plus, the phone is still officially supported for about 11 more months. See, your whole comment or complaint is 100% valid. Those are bugs, poor quality, and other issues that can and should be solved without changing a whole major version for the sake of it because having 17 instead of 16 won’t magically fix existing issues. Then again, upgrading a whole major OS version just for the sake of having a higher number… What is even the point? 🤷‍♂️

Yes, the camera has always been the weak point of the Phone (2), but calling it trash seems exaggerated.

In optimal lighting conditions I’ve taken some beautiful photos, landscapes and even macros.

It could have been better, but it wasn’t. ☹
