The typeface is unique and a signature look on larger sizes. But on smaller screen densities and type sizes, this really runs into some trouble and is not legible. I’ve designed Apple Watch apps where this is especially critical and i’m super sensitive to it because every pixel matters. Apple’s SF Compact and Rounded fonts are really great at conveying information in limited space (Apple HIG guidance link).
I think nothing should save ndot57 for trademark moments, and use a more traditional sans that renders well at different pixel densities for body or caption text. I think it will be inevitable that they will need custom variations to make sure these render clean on any screen size or shape. Aesthetics are cool but readability is a huge thing for me and in my experience, many people who use devices at a distance.
Apple accounts for this well and i’ve always appreciated that they accommodate for the difference. Samsung just use out of the box fonts, which ends up in so much wasted space on smaller devices (ESPECIALLY wearOS devices).
