There are very bad issues with the default camera app. One of them is the known lag of processing, but it has much worse issues.
- The default app creates weird details, almost like AI dreaming.
- The default app oversaturates images way too much
- The default app removes depth
- The default app fails with white balance etc…
I downloaded Open Camera and Gcam. I have a few shots to show that are very good at showing the difference in these apps.
The Open Camera setup is like this: You can shoot HDR, but one way of getting consistent good results is by taking exposure bracketing with at least 3 different exposure levels and combining the shots manually in Vibrance HDR app.
But Gcam somehow blows them both out of the water with the very normal and realistic look of the shot. I Installed Gcam and it works.
The shots are zoomed in to the area of interest and thats why are pixelated but that doesnt matter. Also Im sorry for the dirty window in front that has some blurry dirt but these still show the difference well:

As you can notice the default cam somehow makes the trees look like they are flat 2d planes. All highlights and shadows gone completely. Colors are off and too vivid/saturated. Oversharpened. The flatness is the worst offender. Open Camera with exposure shots combined bring back the shadows and highlights in the trees pretty well that brings back the depth, but has some other issues (this can get very good results if fiddled with enough). The Gcam though just looks correct out of the box. These differences are huge in overcast conditions. If you look at the skyline of the trees, the Gcam shows the edges in massively better way.
Please do some work to the camera app ASAP.
EDIT: Additional photos in low light conditions. Once again the Gcam shines in comparison. Gcam captured the hue of the environment very well. The default app completely breaks the sunset shot. The light rays look horrible and the lens flare is off, but somehow the Gcam manages to take a good looking shot? The result of the default cam though is unusable.

Also for some reason I cannot change the power button double click camera shortcut to anything else, I would like to change that to the Gcam please. This is android, what is going on Nothing?
Maybe just create a Gcam based default build if that is possible.
