Hello

I came across a post which talked about the Phone (2a) (I think?) getting region locked when moving out of India and the SIM not being able to be used (something like that). I wanted to ask if this would happen if I bought the Phone (2) in the US and moved back to Saudi Arabia, or if nothing like that would happen.

Cheers!

  • Hey 👋

Region lock is only applicable to the units manufacturerd and sold in India.

All other units should be international, however, please cross-reference bands supported by your carrier and by your phone to ensure optimal network functionality.

Derren changed the title to Phone (2) - International Variant Region Locked? .

@Derren is there any plan to remove the region lock? This can really cause lot of inconveniences to users who moved abroad and might need to reset the phone.

SarmadShaikh The regional lock for Nothing phones usually only affects the zone where a phone intended for a region can be activated for the first time with a SIM card. This is to prevent re-exporting and selling the device in different areas than the ones it was originally assigned for sale by Nothing. Region lock for Indian Nothing phone units is most likely, probably even guaranteed to never be removed. Sure, it can cause inconveniences, but only in a case when the phone has to be/been reset. A factory reset is never needed except if it’s for some personal purposes or when a reset is the only way to fix a rare temporary software issues. Anyway, the need of resetting a phone is very very rare, but if you need to do so, there isn’t really an option except to buy a global unit or order an India SIM.

Mine got locked once, but I managed to work around it with support from the team. Last year, I pre-booked the Nothing Phone 2 and then traveled to the US the following day. I activated it with an Indian SIM before leaving, but a faulty update within a month rendered the phone unusable, requiring a factory reset. Subsequently, the phone was stuck on the welcome screen with both an Indian and a US SIM inside; surprisingly, I could still receive calls but couldn’t get past the welcome message. After emailing Nothing on Friday, by some magic, the phone started working on its own by Monday, and the restriction message was somehow bypassed. They responded quickly, apologizing for the delay and inconvenience.
