It seems to me that it’s time to understand that under-screen scanners have become a bad experience for the entire market.

Remember how mad you were from a long unlock or failure to work.

The ideal option is faceid for expensive nothing phone models and a fingerprint scanner on the side of the phone for the 2A and Cmf lineup.

Unlocking is something that the user interacts with first of all by picking up the phone in their hands. And this is the very critical thing that should work perfectly even on budget phones. I bought a Redmi 13c for my mom. I was surprised that he had a fingerprint scanner in a miniature power button. I thought it would work badly, but the quality of its work is the best I’ve ever seen.

And what do you think? I gave my mom my Note 13 Pro Plus and switched to the 13C just because the Note 13 Pro+ has a terrible scanner in the screen that is slow and which is blinding to the eyes at night. I hope the Nothing development team will read this post and cook us something delicious.

I’m a big lover of Face ID, it’s great when you’ve got your hands busy and need to be in your phone quickly. I also think it works better when auth’ing for contactless payments. So although I don’t mind it as a replacement to the fingerprint. Although, it does require more sensors and might need a ‘dynamic island’ esque implementation 🙂

Before possibly buying a NP 2a, i currently have an old Zenfone 8 with a under screen scanner (which i hate) and a Fairphone 4 with a power button scanner, which is quite perfect.

Just hoping that the under screen Nothing implementation is better than the Asus one !

I absolutely agree… the world ignores the simplicity and possibilities of side-mounted fingerprint. You can unlock, use gestures, make scroll and interact faster without touching the screen.

drawback of having side mount scanner is that once its broken its gone.
its not same with screen, you get double protection - gorilla glass plus tempered glass.
what would you do if button is broken due to any reason.

I had a cheap Samsung model with side mounted fp sensor and it just comes to taste what’s better imho.

Right now the under display fp from my Phone 2 is the best working sensor I’ve encountered so far. I’ve had maybe three mistouches the whole last two weeks.

RapidZapper changed the title to Alternative to under screen fingerprint sensor .

Anonymous297 The fingerprint sensor under the display can also break too… if the screen protector breaks it won’t work either.

It’s much cheaper to replace a side fingerprint sensor than to replace the entire display.

Ↄɾ fix it doesnt stop working if screen protector breaks. it stops when screenbreaks. its under the screen not under the screen protector. plus you cant put ultrasonic reader inside of button you know..

vovan-v Apple just launched a phone with a multifunction touch button in 2024 (which is the same but without FP)… Sony has been using it for years in its premium models… I would say it is the future.

Ↄɾ fix Sony is the most outdated company there is, to this day they can’t make a screen that will take up the entire area of the phone.

Anonymous297 You don’t need an ultrasonic or optical sensor, if it’s not under the screen… they’re not better or worse. I’m just saying that I like a FP on the side.

vovan-v right! I agree with you. The fingerprint scanner on the power button is so outdated… the way I see things, a good fingerprint reader under the screen (preferably ultrasonic) is the most intuitive and natural way to unlock the phone and apps. I don’t like to wrap my fingers around the phone to be able to unlock.

fingerprint sensor under the screen is the best, in my opinion. It’s better than side mounted like the ones used in Xiaomi.
