  • Nothing ear (1) is carbon neutral

Friends,

We started Nothing because we believed we could do things differently and better than the current tech world. We want to create products that we’re proud of sharing with friends and family, and through them, create optimism for the future. An optimism which we think is sorely needed. And for us, how the products are made is just as important as what we make.

In August this year, the warnings stated in the U.N. Climate Report spurred the team and I to double down on our sustainability initiatives. We’ve reached the highest global temperature in 125 years. As the U.N. Secretary-General, António Guterres, declared, it’s a “code red for humanity.” The science is clear: real action is needed more than ever.

In fact, we’ve been building our sustainability plan for a year, but we didn’t want to reveal anything until we could present some concrete achievements. We want to do, then say. And now is the time to start sharing.

As a new challenger, we’re unburdened by the past. We can move faster than our incumbents – more established brands who are moving incrementally towards their sustainability goals. Unlike them, we wanted to produce results from the get-go. So we started with ear (1).

You can’t fix what you can’t measure, so that’s where we started. We partnered with internationally recognised third party organisations like SGS to understand the ear (1)‘s carbon footprint, which comes out at 1.78kg. Its life-cycle carbon emissions have been offset using renewable energy certificates for the manufacturing process and carbon credits from Verified Carbon Standard, a global standard for certifying carbon emissions reductions.

This means that ear (1) is officially carbon neutral – and this includes every unit we’ve shipped from day one. Going forward, every ear (1) unit will be labelled carbon neutral on the packaging. But this is just the start, and there’s a lot more we can and should do.

We know where we want to be: a world leader and an example in our industry on sustainability. It’s going to be a long road, but we’re excited about and committed to every step. There’ll be more to share about our progress in the coming months, so stay tuned.

Thanks,

Carl

Fantastic! This is the way forward! ⭐
Carbon neutrality, for a lot of people, adds real value to a product. Congrats to the Nothing team - excellent work offsetting all previously sold units too 🙏

This is the way to go! That too being Carbon Neutral right from the first product, it’s so good to hear! Much needed in these times, looking forward to more updats from you regarding this! 🙌

This says it all right here. Leading the pack because you can. This takes courage, this takes guts, this takes true leadership and Nothing is at the forefront. Keep leading us in the right direction. 🙌

These a great achievements and I appreciate the calculation of the GHG footprints as am a sustainability manager myself. This will hopefully inspire more in the market. I do hope that the sustainability work does not end there, as certificates should be the last way out to become carbon neutral as the process should be: measure, reduce and offset what is left. Would be great to see the life cycle analyis results and where the emissions come from and what cna be done to avoid in the first place.

I think sustainable product design like longevity and replacable parts shoud play a cornerstone in nothings design decisions, as this will also impacts their footprint.

Despite, this is a great start and happy to have see the future developments of nothing as a leader in this field (?).

Kudos to you and the whole Nothing team in achieving such an incredible feat. Sustainability is so important to each company and as consumers, it’s pleasing to hear we are contributing to a great company in regards to this topic.

Keep up the great work and keep making more steps in the right direction. 👏

This is definitely the right step, the company is focusing on a better tomorrow right from the start. Looking forward to knowing the future plans on the environmental front and of course the products as well.

Carl Absolutely love the intention behind focusing on sustainability from the get go, extremely refreshing to see it done in a meaningful way in the world of tech.

One genuine concern I wanted to raise is if the transactions with the chosen crypto for purchases factor in to calculating the footprint? Don’t get me wrong, accepting crypto with all things web3 on the cusp of going absolutely bananas is smart but I believe choosing to accept cryptocurrencies with a lower environmental impact (e.g ADA & XRP) would solidify the mission towards being as sustainable as possible 🙂🌿

    Great feedback, @suhantm.
We’ve actually set up a team here at Nothing to look into that and sustainability as a whole. I’ll be forwarding your feedback to them. And yes, we’re aware of the environmental impact of crypto and that this industry is also committed to dropping emissions in the next few years – something we’re monitoring very closely. 👍
