Phone (3a) Series Battery Life Discussion

I recently purchased the Nothing Phone 3a and have noticed that the battery drains very quickly during WhatsApp video calls. Even with a full charge, the battery percentage drops significantly within a short period. Is anyone else experiencing this issue? Are there any settings or optimizations that could help reduce battery consumption during video calls? Any suggestions would be appreciated!

I have an almost weak signal.

- all functions work

- even the VPN I keep on 24/7

- two devices, 3a and 3a Pro

- two different mobile networks

- 3a Pro, 1% within 1 hour and 10 minutes

- 3a, 1% within 1 hour and 5 minutes

When Wifi is on:

- 3a, 2 hours and 20 minutes for 1%

- 3a Pro, 2 hours 45 minutes for 1%

(3a is the primary device and I have multiple apps running)

According to this measurement, sleeping 8 hours during the night should be 7%. Maybe without VPN, 6%

So, about the signal, it doesn’t have to be weak, very weak or anything - just if it’s less than basically perfect the phone works a lot to get it to be perfect, but it can’t, thus the “drain”; quotation marks because it’s normal, it’s just on Qualcomm’s end that they didn’t optimise it to minimise the effect on the 7s Gen 3 chip. So yeah, 1% per hour on average is more-less the same as what I had with my cooking pan example, and what many other users around here have overnight when they sleep. Thanks for the additional data 🙏

Edit: From Notebookcheck’s review, it averages 1.67 Watt when idling, and that’s quite a lot of wasted power when the phone is doing nothing:

abhiraj_FajMrEqzKe Nothing can ever be fixed as long as people are doing anything except post their battery usage stats. This is like coming to a doctor and refusing to tell what is wrong with you, except “Doctor, it hurts!”.

Anonymous931 Bro, not everyone is a tech expert. Do you think people have nothing better to do in life than come here and complain about battery life? We just want a phone that lasts a full day. Even nothing acknowledged the issue. And about battery life, the screenshot I have provided is from my old phone. I haven’t charged this phone in two days still it has 25% battery while having an inefficient 720g.

Hi,

I’ve been using the Nothing Phone (3a) for a few days and feel the battery is draining a bit quickly. On average, I’m only getting around 4–5 hours of screen-on time, which feels lower than expected for a 5000 mAh battery.

Is anyone else facing this? Any suggestions to improve it would be great.

AkhilAr2004 I have just checked my battery performance on my 3a Pro, 51% battery usage showing 5 hours and 44 minutes of screen time, which I understand is excellent, indicating a total potential screen time of over 11 hours from fully charged. I use it in dark mode, switched off ALL app background activity unless in use. Bluetooth off unless required, my usage varies, from light gaming, DuckDuckGo/Chrome scrolling Tik Tok, FB, Linked In, Whatsapp, calls, camera/editing hope that helps

Thanks for sharing! I’m a little heavy user and play games like COD only for a short time, so maybe that’s why my SOT looks a bit lower. However, I’ve noticed that even during normal Instagram scrolling, the battery seems to drain a bit faster than expected. I’ll try some of your suggestions to see if it improves.

I used to charge my phone 90% daily in morning and use it till the when the battery lasts. From few days even though my screen time was 1hour or 2hour the battery getting decreased from 90 to 70,60 like that why would this happen, help me out to fix this

Turn off the phone, power it back on and then charge. There’s a rare software bug in Nothing OS when you limit charging percentage, when it shows that it’s at like 90%, but you power your phone off, and when you power it back you see it at 72% or something like that, meaning Nothing OS was “lying” to you about it being at 90%.

You literally don’t have to be a tech expert to post a screenshot of battery settings on your phone. People say that their batteries are draining - no one is denying that or calling them wrong - but they don’t attach any screenshot so no one can advice them or tell them what to do because no one knows any detail as no detail about the issue was given to start with.

Anonymous931 Bro, I’ve been attaching screenshots in every post. The solution you gave me was impractical if I turn on airplane mode, what happens if someone needs to call me in an emergency? Again, I’m not a hater of Nothing. I bought this phone with my own money because I believed Nothing would provide quick updates to fix issues. What a fool I was for trusting the reviewers. I should have gone for the Vivo iQOO Neo 10 (China version), which costs almost the same in my region. And once again, I have to say this no phone under any circumstances should lose 10% battery overnight. That’s almost unheard of.

Like I said, Qualcomm is to blame because their modem is squeezing a hell lot of juice when signal is nothing but perfect, Nothing can’t do much about it as that’s a documented problem with 7s Gen 3.

What I said as my solution to your previous post was to try it once, only one night, and verify that. You cannot claim that exactly that one singular night someone would call you in an emergency on your Nothing but not on your other phone. Like, come on, be serious.

So you would find and eliminate a possible problem, or, if you are lucky, find that’s not the case on your end but that something else is draining battery in your phone. Then you would come here again and we (community) would work together as that’s the point of this community, no? To fix issues together if those issues are fixable, while we raise awareness about the problem with Nothing and wait them to fix (again, if it’s fixable).

Not unheard of, sadly (MediaTek in their pre-Dimensity days, ehh), but I fully agree with that, yes.
