CMF Phone (1) Support for Android 16?

I got android 15 in my CMF phone 1 in 2025 and if I get android 16 in the same year. Does my software update support of 2 years end? Will Android 16 be released in 2025 ?

NOTHING said two years of updates.

The phone shipped with NOS 2.6 2 JUL, so we just completed one year of OS updates.

On NOS2.6, we received 8 updates.

Then 3.0 beta (A15), 4 updates, and NOS 3.2.

So, in a calendar year: We’ve have one android update and 13 updates.

Seems that we’ll get A16 in about 4 months and likely 3.5 in between

Then possibly A17 if we’re lucky and we should have security updates for an additional year.

Can’t complain for £169 to be honest.

Pretty much every manufacturer means number of Android versions after launch vs. the actual years. CMF Phone 1 is said to get two major updates, it already got Android 15, so Android 16 will be the last major update for this device.

Coldpaw well, then anyone in the UK will take them to small claims court for a full refund. That’s why I saved screenshot of Thier advertising. Should that fail, I employed 36 months of finance (£5/mo), so that the lender would be responsible and the product doesn’t match the description 😃

For those interested, you can still buy a CMF1 for £149 with two years of major Android updates.

I also assume that’s indicated from purchase, not release date.

There are some shops still having unopened, new Nothing Phone (1) and (2) for sale, yet I don’t get the fresh update policy when I order one of these devices today. Same goes for CMF Phone 1, if I buy one today, it won’t “reset” the update count of the model. It usually is also mentioned in the fineprinted text somewhere.

That’s why people like myself have a hard time recommending the NP2 in 2025 for example: With Android 16 being the last update and security updates ending in summer 2027, it’s a rather short lived phone. If date of purchase would matter, suddenly unopened NP2 would get Android 18 and security updates well into 2029 - but that’s simply not the case, it never is.

If you do not like nothings android. I know lineage os has one for cmf 1.

Just need to back up everything unlock boot loader and do the steps

Coldpaw it will definitely hold if it’s purchased from NOTHING directly. It’s also never been tested in a court of law, to my knowledge.

It’ll definitely be two years of updates from the date of release, not purchase. There’s absolutely no way that it would stand in small claims in the UK - the minimum claim for small claims is ~£2000 at any rate.
For it to be a consumer rights issue you have to be able to demonstrate that they’ve not done what they’ve said and I think by the time you’ve had two major releases you’ll be more or less at 2 years anyway, even if Google accelerate their cycles.

I had success with businesses that didn’t work to contract and demanded payment anyways. This could be similar if I feel aggrieved with the duration of CMF1 updates. (For note, right now, I have seen a ton of updates and I’d prefer that continue for the 24 months from the initial update).

CMF1 updates (14 updates in little over a year makes me happy. I will be please if this continues through JUL 2026).

People should also keep in mind the release date of a new Andeoid version isn’t what counts, it’s the release date of the manufacturer’s OS variant.

Prime example right now is Nothing Phone (1):

Released in July 2022, it has “three years of major OS updates”, yet Android 15 aka Nothing OS 3.0 has been the last major version. Even if it would ve literal years - a Nothing Phone doesn’t get pure Google Android as the OS, it has Nothing OS and Nothing OS 4.0 won’t be released before fall - which is well more than three years after the NP1 has been released.
