The Glyph Matrix SDK is here!

And as you may have heard during our launch, we are once again publishing a Developer Kit to help our community build their own functions for Phone (3)'s new interface.

We’re grateful to @Fr4nKB @RapidZapper @SebiAi @AndreaFanelli and @Rahul for building the very first community Glyph Toys using an early version of the SDK. Their inputs helped us to refine our documentation and identify how to make building for Phone (3) as easy as possible.

Leveller and Magic 8 Ball are great examples of what can be achieved - simple toys and tools that are utilised without turning on Phone (3)'s main display.

Rob ⚡️ Hey, I am the developer and made an app as well which uses Glyph Developer kit. So will I have to make a new project for using this Glyph Matrix? Can’t I use this API in that app and make something for this phone as well?

Rob ⚡️ this is great but I imagine we need an actual device to test and build these? In the launch video there was a Matrix Simulator - will this be made available as it would be a great way to validate and test work without a phone.

PS: While it’s great work by all involved - feel like need to really polish up the SDK and tooling for developers to get the maximum traction on this.

Vishwam Yes, you will need to create a new project with your preferred package manager and install the new API, as it is different.

Joseph_Developer So existing app and API can’t be implemented for this? I already have an app on the play store using GDK which I recently published. What to do with that now?

Vishwam If you can, just update your API and add the features you want to the Glyph matrix.

Joseph_Developer Sorry I didn’t understand this. I already have the API sent by the team and my app is going good. So now what is the best option and next step for me? I suppose that API won’t work for this. Or will it work?

Vishwam Sorry, I think we’re not understanding each other, but I’m going to ask you some questions and then I’ll be able to answer you better.

Is your app made in Flutter or Kotlin?

What do you want to add? New features with the new API, or upgrade your old API to the new one.

Joseph_Developer My app is made in Kotlin and add new features with the new api for my existing app. First of all is this possible? Because right now my app is compatible with phone 1, phone 2, 2a series and 3a series so want to add phone 3 as well. So is it possible without disturbing existing features?

Vishwam Interesting, in that case if you updated the API you would affect all the other devices, because as phone 3 only has a matrix Glyph and the others have normal Glyph this would be chaos.

What you can do is add the new API separately without affecting or touching the old API, so you have the functions of the other phones and the new phone separate.

Joseph_Developer Ok that way I can add all the device right without affecting other devices? Like 2 apis in a manifest files and 2 API files in libs folder? That would workout right? So for that I have to first apply for the new API right?

Vishwam Yes it would work, but to keep your code and architecture clean I recommend that they be in 2 separate folders, one for the new one and one for the old one.

Joseph_Developer Ok thank you so much. Applying for the API for this glyph matrix and thinking about the features to add. Because the features I have for other phones can’t be added in this so need new bunch of features for this

Joseph_Developer Thank you so much. One last doubt, I was going through their .aar file and documentation. So in that file they added 23111 which is for 3a if I am not wrong and GlyphManager and GlyphMatrixManager as well. Then also will I need separate API for matrix? And shall I keep the old ketchum file in that?

Vishwam Yes, keep it, but remember to keep everything clean and organized so that dependencies don’t conflict.

Joseph_Developer Thank you but I think you missed my second doubt of having separate API for matrix. The one they gave won’t work right and I will need separate for this? I mean keep both API

Vishwam mmmm… I think so, you should maintain the APIs, right now I don’t have the API, I’ll have to test it.

Joseph_Developer Hey, thank you so much. Then I think before applying for another API I have to add features now and release this in closed beta and ask some phone 3 users to test it. I think that’s the best option

Vishwam If you want, I can help you test it, since I’m going to buy the Nothing Phone 3, I just have to wait for it to arrive in my region of North America.
