Kyubendo https://browser.geekbench.com/ios_devices/iphone-16. Geekbench is crossplatform the antutu scores aren’t cross platform that’s why they’re in a separate section on their website the score nevertheless is 1.5 million.

But if you consider actual cross platform stuff like geekbench which also works on x86 single core on any m series chip is 400ish points above a 8 elite. 8s gen 4 meanwhile with its measly 2k in single core is not even in the same playing field.

8s gen 4 is a crappy chip that qualcomm dialed up power targets and core config just to match a 8 gen 3 at a higher power envelope. Every phone using it runs hot, Now that the embargo is up a reviewer actually got the NP3 to 63°C in a test.

Which I’m pretty sure falls beyond the normal operating temps for the batteries.

I always run my SoCs at 100% for long periods at end while reading it on a melamine-faced surface. I can’t think of a more unrealistic surface to conduct a test upon.

So, that’s a normal use case if I ever saw one.

Unrealistic maybe, regardless its also true no chipset breaches 50 degrees under those same ‘unrealistic’ conditions.

Also based on most preliminary reviews that ran games on the phone, A reviewer was complaining that the phone got uncomfortably hot. That seems to be The consensus for anything running this chip.

IMO qualcomm optimised this to beyond what this chip should have been capable of in terms of power targets to match the 8 gen 3, If I had to wager although we haven’t gotten die shots of this SoC yet the die size would also be lower than a 8 gen 3 because this is their budget offering even though it matches the 8 gen 3 albeit at apparently much higher power targets.

The fact that it’s core config is basically just 8 cortex a720 cores (Big.little more like big bigger) doesn’t help, technically a720 * 7 + x4 which is basically just a beefed up a720 with higher clocks. Compared to 1+5+2 config on the 8 gen 3 which runs at this performance envelope but at lower tdp from what I’ve seen.

Kyubendo multicore realistically doesn’t matter much for general OS tasks or gaming since it’s not that multithreaded only thing that is would be video exports in a video editor or something along those lines, either way multicore on a18 is around 1500 points higher than a 8s gen 4 and is 1500 points below an 8 elite But in the case of the 8 elite and the a18 and hell even the 8 gen 3 with identical perf as the 8s gen 4 it’s all at much lower power targets, With regards to your second question think it was running 3dmark.

I guess I don’t understand the complaint? The chip is running within thermal specification and the phone gets hot to the touch?

Do people feel that the SoC will prematurely die?

If NOTHING gets a few complaints they’ll just crank up the thermal-based throttling.

I have my GPUs run 100% for years on end without issue, but my office gets hot.

I did buy them to use them after all.

If it’s uncomfortable then don’t run them in that manner.

CMF1_hacker The fact that that the chip gets that hot means they’re wasting energy as heat instead of say having more conservative power targets. The only reason that crap chip has to do that is because it’s overtuned garbage across the board starting from inception because it’s all a high power island.

Unless you’re making the argument that NOTHING should not run it as hot and thermally throttle it and lose out in the benchmarks.

If you’re making the argument that NOTHING shouldn’t have used that chip, that’s being naïve. NOTHING selected it as it’s less expensive, can do OK in benchmarks and a tiny fraction of users with ever let it get hot. They can even later, in their first update, apply aggressive thermal-based throttles after all of the reviews are completed.

I guess that I don’t really understand the argument you are making.

I want to have NOTHING use the less expensive SoC and the savings on something else like the GM/GM-SDK and ES.

CMF1_hacker You think aggressive thermal throttling will work for a inefficient architecture idk if you know this but each of the different reference ISA designs on arm have different voltage targets where they’re most efficient regardless of how much you throttle the perf it reaches a point where the threshold falls off and no my argument is that this phone should have come with a 8 gen 3 instead of this joke of a chip if for it to even remotely justify the price tag because imo the BOM is lower than the phone 2 with how many corners were cut, The messaging that this is their first ‘true flagship’ doesn’t help their case either. Given nothing grew in the 2 years since phone 2 id argue BOM costs are even lower because of larger lots when it comes to bulk ordering components.

Phone 2 was released in an environment where software imo was in a much worse place than it is now when it came to manufacturer spins as well given, the competition they have now, It’s much harder to justify getting weaker specs for the ‘experience’.

TLDR Phone 3 might have been decent had it released around the Phone 2. Now with the competition stepping up their software game immensely. Nothing OS doesn’t really bring much to the table that say a pixel or samsung would apart from GM assuming people even buy many of these. An open sdk is useless if no devs hop on board the train. Case in point stuff like the now bar on samsung which was useless prior to Android 16 for third party apps.

CMF1_hacker Marginally lower id say because skimping on displays glass and chipset compared to just the glass on ph2 and cameras whatever they saved by skimping on SoC display and glass they spent on cameras equalising both but imo slightly less than phone 2 because there was no sub flagship SoC with lower die area that overtunes itself to try and match the previous year’s flagship available back then 8+ gen 1 was a flagship chip with flagship power efficiency just last year’s model.

Specifically the one nothing used on phone 2 was a further downclocked version where I very much agreed with their descision to use that sku even if they likely made it to get a better deal on it because It had stellar power efficiency even compared to the 8+ gen 1 normal edition and miles ahead of the garbage scamsung 4nm version.

Don’t forget that everything made is in the context of the global economies and we’re living in a time where political uncertainty, trade tariffs and production costs means that everything is meaningfully more expensive.

The TL;DR is that most of your posts are missing an important qualifier - “In my opinion”

(Unless you’ve got insider information on how much it costs Nothing to buy these components, and their R&D costs, and production spin-up costs, and all the other associated things…)

Smii You can make educated guesses based on what other manufacturers offer at the same price point and then nerfing those prices to account for economies of scale. I’m pretty sure nothing themselves made a video of them explaining the BOM costs on their phones was.

If anything most of this launch was arguably spent on marketing and the ‘teenage engineering tax’ perhaps for that atrocious joke of a ‘design’.

In my opinion, the design is great! It’s refreshingly different.

They did some videos with some hypothetical phones showing some BOM costs but you can’t argue that they’re going to be accurate enough to base an actual price off plus I even recall that some things were blurred out - I think it was the SOC - because of licensing and pricing agreements.

I, for one, love the design and will gladly pay a premium of 20% to have something unique and different. Having said that I lived around the corner from EA Dice and had an OP-1 to mess around with. (If you want better specs and no design, stick with POCO as there’s not wrong with them, just boring).

I felt that way since the NP1 and don’t see this as any different.

I feel that NOTHING has essentially NO marketing budget compared to other brands.

You seem really offended, do you dislike oddball industrial design? It’s 100% FLAGSHIP in the design department, perhaps even too avant garde for most, but I’m OK with that and even pay a premium.

Smii Which is what I said earlier you can realistically extrapolate how much it costs based on the lowest common denominator using the hardware granted cameras displays glass protection are all variables as well but given most of them are similar to phone 3 except the cameras if you consider the budget offerings with the same chip and cameras. You can just slap 50 dollars to that price and mind you I’m basing this off selling price realistically the BOM costs would be much lower.

CMF1_hacker Yes who’d have guessed that I hate the design, Every single nothing product up to this point has vibed with me in terms of design, yes even phone 3a pro. The 3 on the other hand absolutely not it looks atrocious. I remember some reviewer ig it was mkbhd said something along those lines and ⅔ people there which is already a subset of people that aren’t representative of the general population thought it was ugly. With regards to the comment about Poco they’re good phones for the price but not my thing I want something stable with good software that works that is actually a flagship, Which in the past was a nothing phone 2(even with the cut corners) but I just ended up with an S25 ultra because of the atrocious design and all of the aforementioned reasons.

Which is all long text to say I was waiting for a drop in upgrade to phone 2 for two years, this isn’t it.
