NP3: recent update (11 JUL) and NOTHING fixes (Google Pay and no throttling)

Dear Colleagues, I received my NP3 on 11 JUL with Metroid_V3.5-250529-1404 installed. It then updated to Metroid_V3.5-250626-1934 and I did most of my testing on this ROM. Today it finally updated to Metroid_V3.5-250711-2047. There is a Metroid-V3.5-250719-1646 update for the -IND market (according to a git) at the moment that I cannot run on my -EEA ROM'd phone. What improvements have I seen (Metroid_V3.5-250626-1934 to Metroid_V3.5-250711-2047): 1. Google Wallet/Pay is fixed. There seems to be NO throttling of the 8sg4 chip in this update (when my kitchen was 28C, the test could not complete). It is now 24C (like my very first test and the results are identical). Also, I have had some issues with the Essential Search disappearing and/or always asking me to choose a browser, which I will check over the course of the day.) Someone requested flip from rear camera to selfie camera in an ongoing video recording and that is not present.

Hi! Yeah, I have also added a HR strap (cheapo Decathlon) to the FR45, so perhaps, it is taking longer to process now. This was nearly at the time of the CMF1 to NP3 upgrade. I find the TG Skillrow software janky at best, so I won’t hold that against the NP3.

CMF1_hacker not to go off topic but the FR970 is a real change for me, I went FR945 -> Venu 2 (for the OLED) -> FR970 and just wow, the best of both and then more. If you can afford the N3, push the boat out and match it with the FR970 (in a matching colour…) 😂

CMF1_hacker not tried the camera changes yet, but I am annoyed with the lack of common features in the Nothing camera app; No control over capture time aspect ratio, saturation/contrast etc. and I am sure other things I don’t tend to use but others might. Never had to bother with a third party camera app before, but I might start looking.

PeterGalbavy I find those options under the EXPERT mode, which is what I usually use, however, it only zooms to 10x, which is actually a nice restriction. I can adjust WB/EX/ISO/etc… on the fly with the EXPERT mode. It might almost limit post-processing but I haven’t directly compared.

CMF1_hacker EXPERT mode is great for low level stuff, but the “soft” settings, specifically contrast and saturation, are not there and while, as a long time “real” photographer, I can deal with the iso/f/shutter/wb etc. I prefer sometime to be more general purpose 😉

CMF1_hacker Honestly I don’t care about the benchmark results that much if the underlying chip is efficient and doesn’t cook the batteries and the OS runs well enough.

In this case the chip isn’t efficient due to the core config. Personally I’d be fine with losing performance at the cost of gaining efficiency. To further hammer in my point. Similiar SoT predictions in accubattery despite having a 600mah smaller battery.

PeterGalbavy I agree. I have about 100k snaps on my dSLRs and miss two rotary wheels for adjustment, but hey. It’s not really a “camera” camera and simply a pocket camera.

PeterGalbavy I guess this is where you can set up your own presets using LUTs to have a few ‘your style’ things ready to go. I was pleased to see you can launch the camera with a preset and lens choice ready to go from the home screen so I was going to make a selection that I can quick launch.
I need to do some more thorough testing to see if I like UltraXDR or not. There’s a lot to be said for quick and easy camera use without having to think about settings and proper photography - it’s nice to have both options.

CMF1_hacker I still find it funny that a different thermal throttling temp was even expected because people would cry about lost performance. Not that that would help much apart from heat. Every degree spent heating is wasted energy that could have gone to performing some tasks on the phone.

KamiKaze I’m not sure anyone here is crying, I’m simply curious. I find that Samsung strategy of have a super-high one loop then a precipitous drop interesting … it reminds me a diagnostic mode on VW Diesels for emissions testing.

Smii also true, not really looked at presets yet so that’s on me. But a saturation slider (at least) would be nice for each photo to let me judge without post-processing

CMF1_hacker Samsung thing is kinda irrelevant to this particular argument. Every 8 elite phone performs with efficiency in the same ballpark. Actually pretty sure the dimensity chips are slightly more efficient in fact. The flagship ones that are on N3E anyway. Not like the 8s gen4s issue comes from the node either. It’s N4P as far as 4nm is concerned it’s the best on the market. And yet well you already know the results.

Regarding your point about people crying they would if they found out about nerfed performance the same way say when people found out apple was nerfing performance when battery degradation crosses below 80%. Honestly I doubt the forum is actually indicative of sentiments from the general public as opposed to the minority that actually posts here but I’m digressing here.

Actually, it’s not as clear-cut as you make it out to be at all. The 8sg4 is actually more efficient than the 8Elite at low W (and better than the 8Gen3 at all W). And higher W, the efficiency tales behind other chips (this test must be pulling a ton of W). In day-to-day usage the 8sg4 might even be BETTER than the 8 Elite in terms of performance/battery life depending where it residues on the curve (NOTHING was quite smart to save the cost and go with this chip). It will not be better in this test set-up though. I have attached an excellent screenshot showing that comparison.

The entire video is worth a watch and makes the argument you are attempting to make in a more elegant manner by discussing cores/architectures/etc…

Benchmarks will always be synthetic. Companies have been juicing their hardware to make the benchmarks look as good as possible since the beginning of benchmarks. For me, it can be a handy rough indication of relative device speed but it doesn’t really mean a lot for day-to-day use.

CMF1_hacker I’ve seen the video before which is why I was confused initially. Then I realised these were reference qualcomm designs with likely perfect binning. Geekerwan said as much in the video.

Every production design performs like the NP3 does from what I saw.

KamiKaze well, you’d want perfect binning for the benchmarking. Is there an easily accessible way to monitor and record CPU Wattage draw over time? I’m curious where the SoC sits on this curve during stress testing.

CMF1_hacker The second thing is they were comparing with a redmagic device. That already has a pretty aggressive scheduler anyway since it comes with active cooling. Again like I said there’s a 600 mah delta between the battery on the NP3 and S25 Ultra if the low power power efficiency was higher(I don’t game) . You would think there would be a large delta between the SoT. There isn’t 12 hours 8 minutes in mixed usage. Which is what you’re getting as well. Mind you the rated capacity on the S25 Ultra is actually 4855mah my particular unit seems to be at 4900mah. From a week of full charge cycles on accubattery.

CMF1_hacker update received and installed this morning, still having issues with contactless with google pay… anything to ne done ? Support mail isnt helping much

CedricMarc another pre-release tester and I both had issues and they seem resolved now. Someone below/above, said that it worked fine on their hardware before this update. Thus, perhaps there are different hardware configs available. The pre-release people had the higher spec configuration. It didn’t work for me on the MAY or the JUN ROM with the high-spec hardware but worked after this update.

I would also love to see a feature where we can shoot in RAW or unprocessed and then add filters after the fact - I don’t always know where I want to develop an image to at the time of shooting, so applying a strong-handed preset doesn’t fit totally naturally to me.

Smii yeah, I am agree. Is there a way to even turn off post-processing, or get the RAW file out. I don’t really have time for that and would like to turn off all PP (perhaps that’s what the EXPERT mode does).
