Nothing OS 4.0 Beta – Need Clarification on Actual Improvements

Hi team,

I’ve updated my phone to Nothing OS 4.0 Open Beta (Android 16) – around 3.19 GB – but after using it for a few days, I’m honestly not seeing much that feels new or exclusive to Nothing.

Here’s what the changelog mentions and what I noticed:

🔸 From the changelog:

Android 16 Beta base update

Pop-up View with two floating icons

Two new lock screen clock faces

2×2 Quick Settings tiles

Extra Dark Mode (already existed on other Android 15 devices)

App optimisation option (startup speed – doesn’t seem to change much in real use)

New “Stretch” camera preset (very subtle effect)

Essential Apps & Playground (AI + community sharing) — looks interesting, but not clearly functional yet.

🔸 Issues after update:

Battery draining faster

BGMI lagging and slower performance

Camera quality – no visible improvement

No major UI/feature refresh other than Control Center layout

🔸 Questions:

1. Which of these features are Nothing-developed exclusives (not just Android 16 base)?

2. Are the battery drain and performance lag known issues for this beta build?

3. Any improvements planned for camera tuning in the stable release?

4. Could we get a detailed changelog explaining what’s changed internally (kernel, optimization, etc.)?

I think many users are expecting more visible refinements after such a large 3.19 GB update, especially in battery, gaming, and camera performance.

jamshi993 it is a beta update…there will be problems and issues with it… you have to send feedbacks from official feedback channels… not all discussion are monitored by nothing team which can help you with this issue…

Open beta are released to get actual feedbacks from users to IMPROVE the experience… if you people enrolled in open beta don’t give feedbacks and just post here…there will be no improvement…IT’S IN YOUR HANDS TO IMPROVE IT…

There are hundreds of this discussion complaining about open beta… and I’m sure those people didn’t even send feedbacks and just complaining here for attention and validation…

jamshi993 exaclty what i’m saying. When other companies reléase beta updates, they usually have alot of new features. oS 4 beta has practically none and battery life is worse.

Hey! So, this is like, the *very first* beta, which is why it’s missing a bunch of the cool stuff we’re supposed to get later. I’m super curious when they’ll drop the next beta for 4.0, or if this might just be the last one before the final release. ’Cause, to be honest, a lot of the really awesome features aren’t quite there yet!

Very respectable words because this is what I suffered after I updated, as I did not find anything new in the os, and I am a person who loves change and I think that everyone needs this, and I suggest a comprehensive change in the interface while maintaining stability like most interfaces with Preserving identity and suggesting the existence of a program that allows me to change in my phone, such as Samsung (good lock) To change most of the forms and this would be truly revolutionary

Just looking at Oxygen OS 16 and origin OS…. nothing OS didn’t even give 10% of features of what other OS provided.. .so disappointed to waste a major update on this

yoon27 No thanks just switch to other brands, next time research better before buying a phone cause unlike you I bought this phone (3a) for the Stock Android not animations and readability issues.

CMF1_hacker is playground actually useful? I mean, Ive gotten a few camera presets there, but thats lt. All people share there are minigames widgets and flappybird Game on the glyph matrix which are not useful nor improves OS performance. Maybe 1 widget i would use would be a system cpu tracker or something like that, but until then, 3rd party apps will do.

Ant-e-so-shial I’m confused as to how these people ended up with a NOTHING device.

Did they buy a random phone and then try to impose charges on the manufacturer? is this common in the Indian/Asia market? As I don’t think I’ve seen this around Europe before, as they simply cite with their wallet?

Just for your info, in a lot of Asian markets (like China, India, Indonesia, Korea, etc.), people are all about getting the best bang for their bucks 💸!

Most people there aren’t loyal to a specific brand, unlike in many Western countries where someone might stick with one company for their entire life.

I’m not saying the hardware is not up to mark or anything—it’s usually the software that doesn’t quite measure up with our mindset!

Its just a general saying don’t take it at your personal throat!

Aaditya Yeah, I understand. There’s more spec racing in those markets. The European market is slightly different and each market has its own idiosyncrasies. That’s why here one usually sees the difference between the EU and the Asian posters.

I fall in the camp of the Europeans. I like tradition and tried-and-true methods. Hence moving to England and buying an Edwardian seaside house and a house in Oxford (again, both different with their own idiosyncrasies that should be exploited). NOS 3.5 was nearly flawless and I have NOTHING products and I like them compared to Apple, Xiaomi and OnePlus, which our household has a lot of. I don’t want to see NOS go down that glamourisation/en-crap-ification route (my opinion) as those options exist on the market and can be bought elsewhere. Unhappy users should sell their phone secondhand and move on to someone that will listen. If NOS changes as per above, I’ll simply move on as well.

Also, I enjoy playing the villain as I don’t have that chance IRL.
