mjmusikhaus as an end user, I can say that I do not see any qualitative progress towards improving software algorithms for photo processing. For portraits I use the Google Camera mod.

mjmusikhaus I came across from a Pixel 7 Pro and to be honest, don’t have any real complaints about the nothing phones camera system. Pixel will always have a slight edge on its AI over nearly all competition however the nothing phones consistent updates and phone tech is certainly nothing to shy away from. So far I am extremely impressed with all aspects of this phone!

mjmusikhaus The camera on the NP2 is certainly the weak point & Nothing has been done to improve the camera software.

Other brands using the exact same same main camera sensor achieve far better results because they’ve worked hard on getting the best out of it.

Nothing has yet to do anything to improve the mediocre camera performance.

There so many features missing here and some of them are very much basic settings.

      1. Night Sight On/Off toggle

      2. Hdr On/Off toggle

      3. Pro Video mode

      4. Log Video mode

      5. Anti-Banding settings

      6. Focus Peaking

      7. Timed Burst Shoot mode

      8. Long exposure modes.

Auto Hdr mode is a mess and inconsistent. When taking group selfies the Hdr becomes horrible and most the time the output will be of no detail. As a photographer i will say the camera department needs to do more work.

csabam_sz_ros yep, pixel camera mod by arnova8g2. I use Gcam-8.7.250.build-8.3_GoogleCamera apk, but this may not working on Android 14 (if you phone has been updated to 2.5.x).

Gun_Put This is untrue, Nothing Phone 2 camera has been improved greatly since the original v2.0 OS release, just check the older YouTube videos. While the Camera is not “perfect” in my opinion it’s “Good enough” and if it misbehaves in any way you can always switch to the professional mode and tweak the exposure, iso, white balance, etc.

DGillies If you’re happy with it that’s fine.

I & many others expect much better results given that the main camera sensor, Sony IMX 890 is capable of much better results than what this phone yields.

FYI, the top three spots for still photography in a survey conducted by MKBHD covering 20 phones, were clinched by 2 pixel phones, the 3rd spot being grabbed by Oneplus 11,which uses the exact same sensor as NP2.

Matt Y’all need to checkout what a phone camera sensor’s true potential is by checking out MotionCam Pro app(free and paid version). They have a YouTube channel. Basically this app lets you shoot RAW Video.. and you can convert it later into ProRes Video/CinemaDNG or just keep it as a DNG sequence. The quality difference is night and day. It literally looks like the video is shot on an actual video camera. MotionCam Pro also have an Windows app where you can convert the RAW into other Raw formats.. basically letting you convert on PC instead of phone itself.

Google Pixel 7 Pro Raw Video

When you shoot RAW, all that matters is the Camera sensor manufacturer. One of the reasons why I chose Nothing Phone (2) is because it has Sony IMX 890. Just see the video sample from MotionCam Pro YouTube channel. How incredibly clean the video is. I know this is not for the normal users. But still a tiny camera sensor producing this level of quality.

Nothing needs to bring RAW video and their flavour of Raw to camera app. It would definitely put them on the map for sure.

What nothing needs is a group of people specialised in Image Processing and AI.

Matter of fact Samsung’s latest video showcasing their video performance was shot on MotionCam Pro app and they made it look it was shot on the stock camera app. Deceiving people at it’s finest. Stock camera app could never reach the quality of Raw video.

People are really sleeping on this app.

hexagonal707x if you’re going to process RAW you might as well use a “real camera”. It’s same amount of work.

Google doesn’t have the best camera anyways, that honor is either Huawei’s flagship (P or Mate series) or iPhone - you can check out the objective scores at DXO Mark.

But again, most of the camera phone sensor processing is about AI detection of subject matter and process the images accordingly (ie. adusting the color temperature based on subject to make it pop).

Nothing will beat a 35mm DLSR except a medium format camera 🙂 You can’t beat physics of a larger lens.

tony_k I’m not saying a phone is going to beat an actual camera. I’m talking about how closer and closer we are now to an actual camera.

            Hi,

Can I ask is the camera auto bokeh a feature or a bug? cause all the photos I’d taken were auto bokeh (all settings default).

            8 days later

Poor rear camera performance after Android 14 update. Already the front cam is a very very poor. But the video performance is good.

Camera performance is poor overall and such a let down. Even very basic issues like no manual override of HDR has not been addressed. It seems Nothing do not believe the camera is a priority or a major selling point. Strange.

After a update back camera are ,not upto the mark please rectify it in next update

Utilize Gcam to get better sensor outputs, as the current stock camera processing requires enhancement.

Classic example of poor programming letting down good hardware ! (Sensors are awesome)
