Nothing Phone 4a and no flagship phone in 2026 - thoughts and opinions

Seeing the news that there will not be a new flagship phone this year is quite sad, but at the same time understandable, even though the Nothing Phone 3 is a Midranger at best. So I feel like Nothing is hitting their toe by not having a flagship this year. Now for the phone 4a, I'm really looking forward to what they will bring to the table. My first Nothing phone was the 3a and I loved it. It even made me leave Samsung (s24 ultra and flip6). But for it to be a phone that I actually buy, it needs to be better than the 3a or even the 3. I feel like Nothing has to connect with the fans that they've lost due to the issues surrounding Nothing Phone 3, phone designs and the OS bugs. If the Phone 4a has outdated specs ( from today's video, it will have UFS3.1, which is a concerning thing), then most people will skip it. If Nothing really wants to keep their minimalist OS and get rid of glyph lights, at least make the phone have specs that make people want to have it.

Damn!! We are in 2026 with a big revelation the phone 4a..i was pretty excited for this one..really want to see nothing succeed. so the stakes are high this time.. My expectations–

Qualacom processor
faster charging

abstractethic carl was talking about flagship level device… so it might have metal frame glass both side and maybe good processor and if we consider your assumptions with it then it will be great phone…

But the prices will be bit higher… because of ram and storage scenes.. most probably around 30-35k INR or 325-380USD… which is higher for mid range phones…

JP those are my expectation not assumptions based on the fact that if nothing is trying to level up, these things might be a good expectation from them..i doubt the metal frame glass design but who knows..and about the price segment 30-35k is mostly expected because in 3a series it was from 20k-30k INR so it makes sense for 4a to go higher..

JP metal frame thing will make it feel more premimum, i like the way they make phone feel premium i am a cmfp2p user and my gosh the feel it has is amazing..

Regarding the pricing of the phone if they fulfill the flagship level demand then it will be a good attraction for the price range..

i saw the phone 3 suffering..like we had better phones at half the price so for someone to use phone 3 they had to avoid google pixel ,apple and one plus devices btw these devices are monstrous in that range full of latest specifications and then there was phone 3 with the reason that they had to suffer a lot in terms of prices for latest technologies as a new brand

Actually, why do we need a new flagship every year?

I’m not referring to Carl’s statement , I’ve already discussed that with my friends. We spend a lot of money on flagship devices for their powerful performance and premium features, so shouldn’t we fully utilize their potential?

Is one year really enough? A minimum two-year gap between flagship upgrades feels better , it allows us to use a phone to its maximum potential and makes the next upgrade truly worth it.

I think expectations are getting a bit unrealistic here. A metal frame on a mid-range phone is honestly wishful thinking, and I’m not fully convinced about a flagship level camera either. At best, we’re looking at a slight upgrade or even a sidegrade from the 3a.
People forget how expensive things have gotten lately. A true flagship camera setup alone would push the price up, and with the current RAM and storage price hikes, it just doesn’t add up. Same with a high IP rating… proper water resistance costs money, and Nothing will have to cut corners somewhere to keep the phone around ₹35k ($350).
If you stack all these “flagship” expectations together — metal frame, top-tier camera, Qualcomm chip, high IP rating — you’re basically asking for a phone that can’t exist at this price. Just look at the competition. The Redmi Note 15 Pro comes with a 7s Gen 4 and is expected to cost ₹38–40k. Even Nord 5 had to cut features due to RAM pricing and is still sitting close to ₹40k.
Carl has addressed this kind of criticism multiple times too. Whenever reviewers or YouTubers point out missing features, he usually responds by saying to look at it from the customer’s POV at that price range. You can’t expect everything without paying more. if they add all those features, the price would jump significantly.
Realistically, I’m expecting a plastic frame and back like the 2a series, a minor camera upgrade or sidegrade from the 3a, Snapdragon 7s Gen 4 / even MediaTek again, which wouldn’t surprise me, UFS 3.1 storage, and mostly the same display and RAM type. Pricing around ₹35k for the 4a, and maybe ₹38–40k for a Plus or Pro variant.
Anything beyond that sounds great on paper, but I just don’t see it happening in reality.

JP I actually just rewatched the video to double-check, and Carl definitely doesn’t mention a metal frame. He specifically says the 4a will be a ‘complete evolution across the board from display to camera to overall performance,’ but he never actually name-drops metal. Maybe he mentioned it in a tweet or elsewhere?
Also, if you look at the design teased in the thumbnail (that side angle), the frame doesn’t look like metal at all to me. It’s noticeably thinner, too. I’m guessing they might be repurposing the Phone (3) board design… the one with the punched-in PCB for the camera to finally get rid of the camera bump and maybe even the standard Glyph lights. That ‘evolution’ he mentioned could be a quad curved display (since he mentioned about the display) or move toward the Glyph Matrix display like on the Phone 3. To me, that seems way more likely than a sudden jump to a metal frame.

Amudhan_Sundararajan yup… he mentioned premium materials exactly… i assumed that to metal frames… because last budget phone of nothing 3a lite has a metal frame… so that’s why i said metal frame…i might be wrong… we can never predict how nothing works…😂

They really have to make 4a better than other a series phones.. because back to back 2-3 controversy might be bad for brand …

sean (1) I reckon the Pro version will be a repackaged phone (3) with a slight trim here-and-there. They’ll likely have spent a lot on developing the underperforming phone and have lots of leftover components, which I expect they’ll put into the (4a) Pro. Hence the ‘closer to flagship’ remark.

I really don’t care that there’s no flagship-level phone this year. If there are no meaningful hardware upgrades to be had then it’s a waste of resources.

Look at Samsung’s Galaxy series – very small/insignificant hardware changes each year. I’d rather see Nothing use their resources elsewhere; in more software features and:

New colour variations, with the price of last season’s colours going down when overall production costs reduce. Although, the unprecedented issue we have now is RAM costs going up so steeply.
Instead of another flagship each year, try tapping into a new market with a standout, specialist phone. Perhaps a compact phone (please!), or one that’s music-centric (headphone jack and high-quality speakers).

This new way of thinking also needs to be supported by phone reviewers and I’d like to see the likes of MKBHD discuss it. Reviewers understandably publish reviews when a new phone comes out, and have ‘Phones of the Year’ awards, but they never/rarely compare new phones with last year’s flagships and answer the question: Are last year’s phones just as capable in most use cases, and provide far better value? Perhaps the problem is manufactures are quick to retire earlier phones when a new one comes out, but if Nothing promises there won’t be another ‘flagship’ level phone this year and the phone (3) will still be available well into 2027, perhaps most reviewers’ “Best Value Phone” at the end of the year will be Nothing phone (3).

sean (1) how do you know phone 3 is underperforming? You don’t know at all in fact. It’s just a wild guess. Without official numbers nobody really knows.

Given the now incremental changes in smartphone technologies, releasing a new “flagship” phone every year is unnecessary - except for the fact that manufacturers need to sell devices and tend to market new devices as being leaps ahead of last year’s latest and greatest offerings.

With the now lengthy OS updates and the narrowing gap with “flagships” devices, “mid-range” phones also don’t really need to released on an annual basis.

I think it is great that Carl and the team are sticking with the (a) Series products. I still use my 3(a) and I love every minute of it. It seem that Nothing really hits the nail on the head with their mid-range devices. Best “bang for your buck”.

And I also agree, flagships do NOT need to come out every year. Look at the major manufacturers doing it - people are holding on to their phones longer because they are tired of “incremental upgrades” - as am I. Right now, the Nothing 3(a) is perfect for what I need, lasts me all-day plus, games well, and is smooth and buttery.

If the 4(a) improves on that recipe, count me in! If not, I am cool with that too - still got my 3(a).

zeroNULLvoid2 Agree entirely, we all know the 3 was a mistake and Nothing are still licking their wounds (financially) the 3a Pro was essentially their flagship model for 2025, it simply met all the criteria perfectly, whilst offering great bang for buck! This is where the future focus should be for Nothing, and of course what they do best. Flagship chasing is costly and pointless, unless you have a wealth of surplus funding. Then there is still no guarantee Nothing will achieve further market share against the larger more established manufacturers and that’s without the ever growing and successful Chinese manufacturers. I love my 3a Pro and it is what convinced me to not return to Google Pixels, all I personally would like to see is stable software development with the cameras, perhaps a bigger battery and it would be nice to have a dedicated SD card slot (2t) Nothing launched the CMF 2 Pro with SD Card storage, so I think at least the 4a Pro deserves this feature too. I maybe alone on that wish, UFS3.1 very welcome too, but NEVER remove the glyphs! the 3’s matrix is hideous!

I remember the days when budget phones had aluminum frames… Yes, the 3a has a nice plastic frame, but if they replace it with a metal one in the 4a, that would be really cool! At the moment, after 6 months of using my 3a, I am very happy with this phone! And despite the standard 2.2 GB of memory or slower RAM, I don’t feel any problems. It’s a great, beautiful, well-balanced phone for the money. It cost me $329. I would like the new model to have a slightly smaller screen diagonal, a metal frame, definitely glyphs, improved camera modules, and an audio chip with a headphone jack! That would be damn good.

huttonstephen5 why do you think 3 was a mistake? Just curious.

I agree 3a pro was better for the price but, why add bloatware and ads to it? Luckily lock glimpse got removed from it but some of us (3a lite and cmf) still suffer this sh*t. This kills the idea behind nothing…

What I hope for newer is that they don’t go again on the road of the ads/bloatware, that was the reason to choose the brand.

Anonymous1227 I think that calling the NP3 a “flagship” was the mistake. Compared to other flagships, NP3 looks like a high-end mid-range phone.

I have it, and I also have a Xiaomi 15T pro, and the difference is abismal. The 15T pro can go all night unplugged and lose, at most, 1% battery whereas the NP3 loses more than 9%.

The battery life alone was enough to make me switch phones. I had no battery life issues with the 3a. I don’t know what changed. Even the Tecno Pova Slim I had, which was $700 cheaper than the NP3 had better battery life.

As I said, if Nothing is not going to release a new flagship every year, they should at least improve their a lineup, and use the 4a line to prove it. I’m willing to go back to Nothing the 4a and 4a pro are worth buying.
