Could you provide a bit more info? are you playing media at the time you’re trying to adjust the volume?
The default behaviour with Android is that when the phone is locked and the screen is off, the volume controls do not function unless you are currently playing media or using bluetooth headphones or a speaker. Since the volume controls wont function, this in turn means the glyph indicator wont either.
