This is my first time participating in a design competition and it is a very important experience for me.So,I would like to use this opportunity share my design process.
In the early stages of design, I studied the faces of smartwatches from different brands and found that they all had a common problem - overcrowding and inflexible hierarchical relationships, which made the faces not easy to read. This is because these designs were based on traditional mechanical watch as inspiration, but I think this is not appropriate for smart watches. Therefore, I have to stipulate that my work needs to achieve the following goals:
- The style must be consistent with the style of CMF
- The need to make full use of the versatility of smart watches
- Inclusion of sports functions
- The design must be simple and not cluttered, and there must be a good hierarchical relationship between different functions
- A more innovative interaction method than traditional smart watch surfaces
↓This was my original design plan, inspired by the control interface of Braun RT20. The second and minute hands fell slowly over time, but later I thought that the hierarchical relationship of this plan was not good enough, so I gave up this plan
↑Braun RT20 control interface
↓The second version of the plan refers to the tilt display design of Casio FS-00 to create a style similar to the electronic watch in the 1980s, but still retains a tiny analog clock, and the step counting system is also changed to a progress bar
↑The inspiration for the second edition design, Casio FS-00
↑Later, I also made some small modifications , such as changing the tilt direction so that users can view information while cycling, for example.the step progress bar was changed to be close to the edge, referencing the running track in the sports field.
But I found it too difficult to program functions in the tilted space, so it was abandoned.
↓In the third version of the plan, I canceled the tilt display design, but retained a similar step progress bar design. The design of the analog clock refers to the radio clock designed by Sony in the 1980s. The design of this version is very complete and is not much different from the final design. However, I think this version still has some shortcomings, so I started to improve the details of the work
↑ Sony ICF-A10W, which inspired me to design this version of the analog clock
↑These are some of the many versions in my third design. I added a power display in the lower right corner. The original power display was just composed of neatly arranged lines, but I thought this design was not innovative enough, so I changed it to a cylinder composed of five rings, the cylindrical design is easily reminiscent of batteries in daily life, allowing people to understand its function without using words.
↑This is my final design. The overall style is similar to that of a classic electronic watch. It also retains CMF’s iconic orange and dot elements as it can display different functions without being cluttered. I think this is a complete and sensible design.
↑These are development guidelines written by me to facilitate CMFs internal team to further understand my design.
↓Finally, these are some of my hand drawn sketches.
Thanks Nothing give me a good opportunity to express my creativity. I hope there will be similar activities in the future.
