Listen up, people. This isnāt about whether āthe device can support itā or whether giving Phone (2) another major update would be āa great opportunity.ā
I get it. I know some of you are upset. I own both the Phone (2) and Phone (3), so obviously Iād love to see my Phone (2) get another major Nothing OS update too.
But hear me out.
Supporting another major Android/Nothing OS version isnāt as simple as flipping a switch. Comparing Nothing to Samsung, Google, or massive Chinese manufacturers doesnāt change the situation. Nothing is still a relatively small company. Yes, theyāre growing fast, but their engineering resources are nowhere near the scale of those companies.
And think about what happens if Nothing gives Phone (2) an extra year just because enough people demand it.
What about Phone (1)? Phone (2a)? Phone (2a) Plus? CMF devices? Eventually every Nothing device reaches the end of its promised major OS support. If Nothing makes an exception every time the community gets loud enough, owners of every other device are going to expect the exact same treatment.
Then when that extra year ends, what happens?
āGive us one more year.ā
And the cycle repeats.
Thatās not sustainable.
Extending support across an entire lineup means more development, testing, optimization, bug fixing, certification, security work, and maintenance for devices Nothing originally never planned to support for that long. For a company Nothingās size, those resources have to come from somewhereāincluding development of current and future devices.
And look, I know some of you are still hoping Nothing will suddenly announce another major OS update for Phone (2). You can hope for it, obviously, but personally, I wouldnāt get my hopes up.
Nothing made a software-support commitment for the Phone (2), and once that commitment is fulfilled, anything beyond it would be a bonusānot something we should expect.
This isnāt Fairphone, where extremely long software support is one of the biggest parts of the product strategy. You didnāt buy a Phone (2) with a promise of 5, 7, or 8 years of major Android upgrades.
Could Nothing surprise us? Sure.
Should you EXPECT them to? No.
Give Nothing feedback. Ask for longer support on future devices. Thereās absolutely nothing wrong with that.
But demanding NOS 5 as though Nothing owes Phone (2) owners another major update after completing the support period they originally promised is different.
Iād rather see Nothing fulfill what they promised, continue growing, and use that growth to offer longer support commitments on future devices than create an expectation that every older device should receive ājust one more updateā forever.
And yeah, Iām saying this as a Phone (2) owner myself. Of course Iād love NOS 5 too.
But wanting another update and being entitled to another update are two completely different things.
So letās just end this here.
Phone (2) had its promised major OS support. We knew the support policy when we bought the device. If Nothing gives us anything beyond that, awesomeāconsider it a bonus.
If they donāt, thatās also completely fair.
Instead of repeating āNOS 5 for Phone (2)ā over and over, letās move on and push for something more realistic: better and longer software-support commitments for Nothingās future devices.
