We are all ears: where do you listen to music?

Many of us start listening to music ready to take flight. A beat and a tune at the right moment can shape our perception of the reality around us - or disassociate us from it altogether, like an umbilical cord temporarily cut or a blind shut for a few minutes or hours. It can motivate us to do more or it can ease the pain, cushioning it. Music, I believe, can be a roll call to our best senses if we are willing to try. Mentally or even physically, what we listen to can paint a picture to an adjusted perspective or tear down the walls around us and introduce a new view altogether. We experience music in a myriad of different ways. Be it for convenience or enrichment of the whole experience, it’s the place and equipment elevating it all, but also the platform we choose. Music is intrinsic to this community, at least for the time being, so I would like to center the attention on the latter: the platform. * **What medium do you use to listen to music?** Did you surrender your daily life to the likes of a subscription? Spotify, Apple Music, even Tidal, Pandora or YouTube Music, they all have found their customer base. Or do you use an app that’s specific to where you live, not having gained a significant footprint on the global market? Or perhaps you refuse to leave behind your pristine collection of physical treasures. CDs were all the rage after and before the vinyls. The future became the predecessor. A lot of us tried them at a store, a few seconds per track, before opening our wallets; a lot of us walked with a Discman, moving like we had cotton below our feet so the music didn’t jump. Digital or analog, buying or streaming; it’s the best method - or the best method for you, the unity, instead of the crowd. You grappled with the possibilities before finding what suits you best and I hope this thread is an invitation for us to share, after all, where do we listen to music. We are all ears.

Cheetosdust What medium do you use to listen to music?

I’ve surrender to Spotify premium many years ago and can’t really imagine myself without it.

25 years ago when I was a teenager if I was told I would be able to carry thousands of music’s always with me and ready to use at a press of a button on my phone (or even my watch) I would probably just call it science fiction. 😅 Back then I would need a huge backpack to carry all those tapes/CDs and lots of gymnastics to keep exchanging then when needed. 🤣

And if we add the blessing of a true pair of wireless earphones, than it really transforms the ritual of listening to your favorite songs and being disconnected from the real world when you need some peace and time for yourself.

Hah, so far, Spotify truly is the go-to place to listen to music these days. I am also a Spotify user basically since the service arrived here in Portugal.

I tried Apple Music when it was released - I believe we had three months for free - and it was not bad, but I went back to the original service. It seems that Apple has indeed improved their service since its debut, but I haven’t tried it recently.

And I completely share the same sentiment about the ridiculous amount of music available. I grew up during the grunge days, so to be able to just press a button and listen to some niche bands like Blindmelon, Candlebox or dEUS, was mind-blowing.

I remember that, when I started with Spotify, I could only listen to the downloaded albums, but then I started to have the data included with the plan, and it was another Aha! moment.

To this day, Spotify and Pocket Casts are companions while I work. 😎

I think it can be interesting, when 2021 is about to end, to have a conversation about the Wrapped stats they usually release. It’s always interesting to compare genres, bands, listening time, etc.

Rob, I never used a OnePlus One, but I did see that and it looks damn cool. Cyanogen was something else. I did try CyanogenMod years later. I was with the Nightlies, perfect for someone who loves to update stuff, hehe. 🤓

I personally use Amazon Prime Music (unpopular opinion, I know) because I found that the quality of music was comparatively better. And also to utilize my prime subscription 😂

I’ve been a fan of French underdogs Deezer. The app itself isn’t as polished as the other giants but on iOS it actually works well.
They’re also passionate about the music industry and all artists, big or small.
I have an eclectic taste in music and the catalogue never missed anything. Oh, and their FLAC offering under the HiFi subscription is great if you have the right equipment - the sound quality is definitely better than most services.

Rudi Tame Impala for sure. They are perfect to lift and lock your concentration while you are working or studying. I listened extensively to “Lonerism”. 😎

I was curious about the other names you mentioned and I started with The Knocks. Literally the first song I listened to, “All About You”, features Foster The People, one band I really enjoy. Thank you for mentioning them.

Based on those names, I think you’ll like The Kills, if you don’t know them already. This post was written with them in the ear (1). When you have a second, set the equalizer to “More Treble” and listen to “Doing it To Death”.

That beginning is the song playing table tennis with your eardrums, hehe. 🤯

The Kills, yes! They’re on my list too. I haven’t got my own pair of ear (1)s yet - but I added listening to ‘Doing it to death’ to my to-do list, following your EQ instructions. Top notch.

But don’t get me wrong, I also dig other genres - even classical. I also listened to Blindmelon as you suggested above, and I quite enjoyed it. Nice vibes, my favourite tune so far is ‘Change’.

I love music and after CD’s I owned a minidisc player (portable), 6 minidisc changer in my car and a micro hifi at home with minidisc player! At one point I had 500 minidiscs (mainly albums)… then Google Play came along and let you upload your own music to the cloud which I did! I sold everything!

I also used Deezer for many years - the music is HiFi quality so for audiophiles out there I highly recommend. Due to the Deezer app being buggy for the last 18 months I’m using Spotify.

I love Parcels and recently been listening to CHVRCHES, Purple Disco Machine, Griff, Miguel Migs, Lorde.

RobIgo Oh man, that’s a lovely collection of MiniDisc you had - do you miss the physical aspect of it after selling that chunk of your collection?

Weirdly I don’t miss the physical aspect, I hate clutter and half the discs I’d probably only go back to once in a bluemoon, I love having music in the cloud/on my phone/pc etc. (I’m the same with paper, I have no paper documents in my house unless I have to keep it, everything else is on scanned on my Google Drive!).

RobIgo Right now, I only use Spotify and, while I don’t miss the clutter, I miss some special editions. I mean, even the other day I was looking at my copy of Lateralus and you just can’t achieve that digitally.

I missed the physical edition of Fear Inoculum and I am not that happy with my decision. 😅

I’m probably like a lot of people my age: I have an extensive CD and mp3 collection that I listen to sometimes, but mostly I just use YouTube Music (and rarely Apple Music). I still miss GPM all these years later.
