Can't get Gmail to background sync

Just got my hands on a 2a and things are great for the most part, but I have one significant issue: I cannot seem to get Gmail to sync in the background at all. I've gone through the usual fixes - toggled the settings, cleared data, downgraded/upgrade the app -- still only syncs when I foreground the app or initiate a sync in account settings. A bit frustrating, though it could certainly be a core Android bug. Anyone else running into a similar issue?

Yeah, I checked battery, background data, the toggles in the app and for the individual accounts (I do have a couple of Google inboxes) as well as the one in “Passwords and Accounts”.

I’ve had a lot of Android phones and never run into this, it’s a bit annoying! (Though maybe it’s a higher power telling me to stop looking at my email so much…)

Eventually removed and replaced the associated Google account and that was effective. Weird one

Hi, did replacing the associated account fix your Google sync issue permanently? I’m facing the same issue, a factory reset did not help

Same problem, nothing works out! Such a nonsense.

Looks like for my case if I received 3 mails when I open the gmail after opening it lists the emails. Then plays the notification sound.

I tried testing by sending email to my gmail from a different email id too. Then after 10 minutes disconnect the recipient device from internet and open gmail. The email doesn’t show.

So the issue is it is not bringing the email upto the device from Google server in BACKGROUND.

All background settings and everything else discussed here is double-checked to be correctly place. Tired of the issue!!!

Hi, my issue is resolved, but I didn’t really understand how. Using ADB tools didn’t really help. In my case, when I rebooted the phone, the Google account synced for approximately one hour. If you go to Settings –> Accounts –> your.email@gmail.com –> three dots in the upper right corner –> Sync now, is it only Gmail that isn’t syncing?. I think the issue was automatically resolved by rebooting in safe mode, letting the phone sleep for 5 minutes 😅, and then rebooting in normal mode.
Try this and let me know if it helps. I’ll try to follow up on this topic.

That resolves this. But using for 2-3 days it again stops sending the notification!!

SaptarshiNandi in the app setting try to turn off all the notifications and then turn them on.

If you did a clean set up and didn’t migrate from older phone, here’s another culprit (‘Notify for every message’ setting inside gmail app. Its OFF by default)

Open Gmail app and go to settings
Tap on your email ID (below general settings)
Set Notifications to ‘All’
Then go to inbox notifications and enable ‘Label Notifications’ and ‘Notify for every message’

Everytime I fix this issue by reinstalling, it happens again after sometime. I only get emails when I open the Gmail app, no notifications otherwise. I tried everything, I think this is a bug.

After some time, I think I’ve found the problem or at least this is what it was for me.
Every time I switch my phone to battery-saving mode, notifications stop arriving properly, and even when I turn off battery-saving, the issue persists until I restart the phone.
So whenever I need to use battery-saving mode, as soon as I disable it I restart the phone, and notifications work again for months.
