It can be quite difficult to determine the root cause of ping fluctuations since there are so many factors that may contribute to this; software, hardware, other devices in close proximity and/or on the same network, current network health, the game developers servers, and even external factors such as weather can have an impact.
A consistent 20 ping is actually considered very reliable and should not have any impact on your gaming experience, its also unlikely to notice any difference below this number. You also shouldn’t compare to ping while using a ethernet cable as this will almost always deliver a more stable experience than wifi.
A good ping for gaming is generally considered to be below 20 milliseconds (ms) - Virgin Media
A low ping rate in the 15 to 20 ms range is considered exceptional - AT&T Business
