I want to critically address some of the comments I’ve been seeing about NP1 and NP2 in this discussion. Yes, the NP1 hasn’t received further Android updates despite community pressure, and now everyone is prematurely claiming the NP2 won’t either. However, people are missing some very critical points here.
The Snapdragon 778 in the NP1 was released when the top-tier chips were the Snapdragon 888 and 888 Plus. Putting the NP1 and NP2 in the same category is completely absurd. Yes, the company kept its promise of three years of major updates, and we all agree that extending this brings additional development costs. But looking specifically at the NP2—as a daily user who has never touched an NP1—the device still suffers from noticeable shortcomings in heat management, battery life, and camera optimization. No matter how much feedback we submit, I personally haven’t seen any tangible improvements or refinements.
The primary reason the community is demanding Android 17 isn’t just for a shiny new version number; we want one last, solid camera upgrade and proper system optimization. That’s my personal stance. The Snapdragon 8+ Gen 1 inside the NP2 is in no way inferior to most newly released mid-range processors on the market; in fact, it easily outperforms them in raw power. Currently, the NP2 stands as the second most powerful phone from Nothing, yet it’s clear that users aren’t getting the refined flagship performance they expected. Our desire is simply to use this device in a way that befits its premium status.
This doesn’t mean the phone becomes obsolete without Android 17 or that Google services will stop working; even on Android 16, it will continue to run every app perfectly fine. However, the device has acquired many software flaws, especially after the OS 4.1 rollout. From what I experience, it feels like a victim of planned obsolescence, suffering from unnecessary overheating. I have already sent direct feedback regarding this.
The hardware is still incredibly powerful, and I want to use this phone without frustrating issues. I don’t want to be forced into upgrading my device for no valid reason, and I strongly doubt these optimization flaws can be fixed solely through standard bi-monthly security patches. The user who started this thread received a promising response from Nothing, and I genuinely hope it wasn’t just a generic brush-off. I hope management takes this issue with the seriousness it deserves
