They set a benchmark on how AI will revolutionize the way we use our smartphones. I’m excited to see Nothings take on it more than ever.
WWDC 2024 - Time for Apple AI
When we say time for nothing AI
- (Edited)
Thanks for the write up Derren!
Looked at this and Verge’s article, looks like I missed an event last night!
Another fun attention to detail users are finding in the Beta is the ability to change the beam size of the torch! As a lighting technician by trade, the ability to change degrees of your torch size is pretty useless, but a neat feature nonetheless.
Thanks for the summary post here, really helpful for people like me that just missed the whole thing. I’m also quite interested to see some of these beta uses of the OS. I like that volume bulge effect, when pushing in the volume buttons, adds to the experience even if it’s ever so slightly. I think any interaction like that help to improve the user experience of the OS, but it might only be for a small percentage of users that really appreciate these little touches.
On the whole, I would say that no big surprises were revealed at the event. Everything was expected in one way or another. I find it interesting to see how iOS and Android (most UI’s) are getting closer and closer, each taking the best from the other.
I don’t think the color design is particularly aesthetic in the iOS cosmos, but the AI integration is 100% in the direction in which I personally would like to use AI.
I think the small software details such as pressing the volume buttons are really well done, but I am also a technology enthusiast and these things immediately catch my eye. However, I believe that even people without an affinity for technology pick up on these things subconsciously and it gives them a pleasant and well-rounded impression of the software.
I’m curious to see what the final release will look like. What about you?
I really have mixed feelings about Apple Intelligence. In one hand, they say that basic AI taks will be handle locally by enabled by chipset that perform those tasks. But on the other hand, they clearly said that they will rely on a cloud based solution for tasks that are more hevy.
But we really don’t know what is the threshold between “basic tasks” and “heavy tasks”, it needs to be clearly identified for the consumer to know what they are dealing with in terms of privacy.
And the fact that they would use ChatGPT integration in addition for some other stuff makes me worry also. I’m glad that it’s not done by default and that people need to enable it.
Local AI is really the key challenge for future smartphone… Apple has maybe the right way to do it by making local AND cloud based performing specific actions. Let’s see how this unfold.
For IOS18… it’s really a joke to be honest, yes they have to present the new stuff, and there are great addition in terms of customization. But did they really have to present that like it was the innovation of the decade ?? Now we have blind Apple lovers that trash android for features that exist since 10 years
I mean… Message schedling… It’s such a basic feature. Great to see that coming tho, finally
iOS 18 customization is something Android has for years now across many skins, but hey better late than never. It was hilarious seeing the people applaud a feature that’s already old.
Apple’s AI though, I’d love to see Nothing’s approach getting inspired by this moving forward.
Great thread. My personal favourite from the keynote is Math calculator. I wish i had that during my school days. Or may be not. I would have grown so dumb then. AI takeover incoming

arpan2308 has this exact same though earlier. On one hand it’s a borderline miracle learning tool, but on the other hand when do I put the effort in to learn it myself.
Obviously these tools wouldn’t be allowed in exams but outside of that, just day to day, it’s almost like we don’t need to know anymore
When I had first heard about AI innovation, I wanted it to do all the boring stuff of my life. Like wash the dishes, take out the trash. So that I could focus my time on learning, creativity and family. I feel like companies are going in the opposite direction. Hope Nothing can do something different.
arpan2308 Yeah I’d rather learn maths myself instead of relying on the auto-calculation. Personally, this feature will promote more laziness and discourage zoomers from learning maths because technology has done it already for them.
lc_nothingfan 100% true. Thats why AI takeover is coming. Soon people will stop using brains
Carl’s take on Apple Intelligence
Derren Windows had this for almost 15 years.
Bit crazy I know. This should have been implemented a long time ago. At least it’s available now.
