I guess this is kind of an appreciation post. I wanted to detail how I’ve found the nothing experience over the last few months.

At some point last year a post on X (formally known as Twitter 😏) caught my eye. I can’t remember it word for word but it was along the lines of “Nothing earbuds have the best sound quality”. Intrigued, I googled and came across the brand. As soon as I started browsing I remembered “it’s the phone with the lights guys”. As I already owned Airpod Pros (which I was already finding uncomfortable) I didn’t see the point investing in more in-ear pods.

The following week, a teaser dropped for Ear (open). I couldn’t believe my luck. I was certainly not going to miss the opportunity to try them out so I managed to snag a pair on Amazon.

Paired with my iPhone 15 Pro, the ear (open) worked wonders. There was no longer any need to let my ears suffer, and the AirPods were quickly yesterday’s news. I didn’t and still don’t miss noise cancellation. The comfort, sound quality, and controls were just worlds apart. Especially at the price point.

As weeks passed, and more time spent with my favourite new Ears, algorithms did their thing and everywhere I turned I saw nothing. The design ethos is kinda what drew me in. Having ‘fallen out of love’ with tech, and struggling to justify carrying a slab of titanium in my pocket I decided to hold my breath and take the plunge. I was going to do the unthinkable - switch from iOS to android.

I joke - it was mostly painless. I tend to use the Google over Apple alternative anyway (GMaps v AppleMaps, Drive & Photos v iCloud). The only issue I had was transferring music. I don’t stream so all of my music is purchased through iTunes. The iOS to android transfer app would move the files over but there was no sound when played! Trust Apple not to make it simple…

As I don’t have a personal computer anymore it just meant I had to download all my purchases (except the Apple forced U2 album 🙄) on my work computer, but then I could transfer through USB-C! Something so simple, I had forgot about since my days using a Pixel 2.

I still have my iPad mini which means I can still manage the Apple family account and devices so it’s not like I had to completely break free.

Anyway, the Nothing Phone 2(a) came just at the right time for me. iOS was becoming very (for lack of a better word) stale. The move to android would’ve been imminent, but I wouldn’t want to just be sinking my time into another device.

A lot of Nothing’s marketing towards me was focused around spending less time on devices, and this really spoke to me. As a 38 year old father of 2 young children, I want to encourage them to spend less time on their devices but I needed to lead by example. The fact I now have roughly 75% less time screen time is an alarming and shocking find.

My phone is now literally just that. A phone. It spends most of the time face down and I’ll occasionally turn it over when I see that essential notification come on (God send!). The Snake widget is so much fun, and the kids love the Simone Glyph memory game!

I think personally the only real downside really is when I don’t have my Fujifilm cameras with me. The camera can leave a lot to be desired. I think if you have the time to work with it, it’s pretty decent, but the odd time I’ve taken a quick snap, I’ve gone back and it’s just a blur as it’s taken the photo well after I’ve pressed. But that is really the only downside I’ve noticed.

I guess in conclusion, I’m sold on the nothing brand and can’t wait to see what comes next! Will always be hoping for a smaller phone but, I guess we’ll have to wait and see 😅

Boyce0 Thanks for joining the community and sharing your experience! It’s always insightful for us to hear about the motives for switching from another brand and to learn about potential pain points when transitioning.

Delighted to see that you’ve been trying out some of the fun projects our community has built! 🤩

Rob ⚡️ Thanks! It’s really interesting to see how engaging and welcoming the community is. I’ve been reading through posts for a while, thought it was time to finally make a contribution 😉

Boyce0 welcome to NOTHING community. Glad to see that you are happy with both the phone and buds. I also got ear (open) it’s a outstanding product. Will be fun to see more of your updates with NOTHING’s interesting products in the future.

Boyce0 if you buy 3 or 3a what u gonna use your 2a for? 🙂

Welcome to the community! And thanks for such a great introduction and write-up of your journey 🙂 Always nice to hear from those that have made the “big” switch from iOS to Android to help show others how relatively simple it can be! And also nice to meet another Ear (open) fan - I use mine daily now! It sounds like we actually have a lot of similar devices which is cool 👀

Hope to see you around the community! If you’re a Discord user, be sure to join Nothing’s official Discord server too 😄

Boyce0 Welcome to the community - really enjoyed this read. I made the full time leap from iOS to Android with Phone (1) after flirting with the idea for awhile, I’ve loved it ever since… for me it was the in-hand familiarity of the Nothing Phone that kept me engaged but, over time the software matured, became more familiar to me and became enjoyable too.

You also unlocked the forced U2 album memory - those were the days!

Firstly, welcome to the Nothing Community!

Secondly, thank you for a lovely write-up with your experience of your switch. It was fun to read about your journey and how you found the brand.

Glad to hear the Glyphs are helping you with your screen time. I also enjoy the attention to mindfulness that Nothing’s phones allow, I always place my phone screen down.

As someone who owns a MacBook Pro and an iPad, I know the benefits of keeping one hand in the Apple garden wall. But I wouldn’t trade my Android life for iOS again.

adbo Thanks! Yeah they’re so good for the gym, I don’t mind people wanting to strike up conversations but at least I don’t have to fiddle with my ears when they do 😅 They work better with the Surface Pro laptop I have to use for work over my Airpods too… there was a weird bug where the airpods wouldn’t connect if the laptop was plugged into the adapter?!…IT couldn’t work it out, and I gave up complaining🤷

I will have to check out the discord server 😃

100hzpanic tbh I don’t think I really need to worry about updating just yet… I’m just getting well ahead of myself 😅

hrry Thanks! The main reason for my switch “If I deep it” (as the kids say) was a more than usable specced phone that had a great design AND was made from plastic! I’m not sure why but I associate plastic with not needing a case, while the stronger materials do?! It makes no sense really but I suppose I grew up on Nokia’s and cases were never a thing 🤣 it feels so freeing! It would be nice to go back to the days of changeable batteries and phone shells 😅

Ealesy101 Thanks! This was the second time I’ve moved from iOS to Android, and it will be the last 😅 … I never listened to that album, I think out of pure defiance!

Boyce0 I don’t think you ever need to buy another phone tbh now when u got ur hands on the 2a. I’m really really happy with my CMF phone one and my ear (open), no chance in hell imma need to switch to another device. But it’s fun to encourage other people buying their phones and gadgets and let more people getting to know the brand. I love expanding the knowledge of nothing

Boyce0 Design wise this brand is on top. But it really lacks OS features. Even things which OnePlus had back in 2019, we don’t have those on Nothing OS. It’s solely relying on features that come with stock Android. They made their on OS based on it but forgot to add multiple features to make it better. Nothing really needs to add features like app-wise data usage control, spatial audio, Dolby Atmos, equaliser and HDR support on more apps! It’s high time! They’re not a new brand anymore

ChaitanyaNarang I think “better” is subjective, and down to personal experience? What you find are ‘forgotten features’ might not technically fall under mass appeal? I mean sure they’re great buzz words but personally for me, I couldn’t care. I genuinely had a list of needs and all boxes were ticked:

                    • Good battery life (2 days vs 1)
                    • As close to stock android as possible
                    • NFC
                    • Decent storage (256GB vs 128GB)
                    • Android Auto (I just need to be able to see maps on my screen)
                    • better physical dimensions than my iPhone (plastic vs titanium, larger screen but lighter and doesn’t require a case)
                    • cost (1 off payment v recurring monthly payment)

This is literally all I needed and as I originally posted, the benefits of switching were spending less time on my phone. But yeah, ironically my needs are totally different to yours 😅 - hope this doesn’t come across rude
