In my opinion I donât see any reason why it âdeservesâ just another upgrade, besides everybody knows the NP2âs hardware will very likely be capable of running Android 18, so it could deserve âjust one lastâ additional update next year⊠We already had this discussion last year when NP1 owners were fuming about not getting Android 16.
Nothing is pretty transparent when it comes to the update policy of their phones. You can check it on the spec sheet, it is often also mentioned when you click through the phoneâs features. Besides there are YouTube videos and written web reviews you can refer to in order to know the update policy before making your purchase decision.
When I bought my Nothing Phone (2) back in July 2023 I was well aware it would only get up to Android 16 and I never once wasted a single second about if, let alone why, it would possibly get further updates. There is no reason at all.
When Nothing starts making exceptions to their policy for just one single device, people cone rushing and demand exceptions for all devices in the future. I already said a few times itâs like opening the pandoraâs box or opening flood gates, once done, the requests wonât stop and the community has enough pressuring reasons by just pointing to that one single exception Nothing once made.
If single exceptions are made anyways, Nothing doesnât even need to specify their future update policies. Like whatâs the update policy of the Nothing Phone (5a)? It is âFor as long as we feel like! đâ or âFor as long as you make motivational noise on our community forums!â - thatâs not gonna work for a company trying to grow.
