Last month, we announced the Community Edition Project. An industry-first co-creation project that invites our community to design the ultimate version of Phone (2a) alongside the team at Nothing.
We are very excited to announce Kenta and Astrid as our Stage 1: Hardware Design winners!
Kenta and Astrid, who operate a creative studio together, collaborated to create their concept: Phosphorescence.
Using green-tinted phosphorescent material finishes, elements of the back of the phone emit a soft glow in the dark. This feature is purely analogue, requiring no power source, and can last for hours before gradually fading until it recharges by daylight. It is widely used in the watch industry. Like the fireflies, the glowing feature can also be functional, for example locating your phone in the dark or indicating your presence.
They will now embark on the co-creation process alongside our Industrial Design Team and our R&D team. Throughout the journey, their concept may go through several design iterations - so watch this space for updates.
To arrive at the winning concept, our internal jury, the Industrial Design Team, shortlisted entries based on their design merit and storytelling. The shortlisted entries were then assessed for feasibility by the R&D team before community votes were consulted to find our final candidates.
We received a huge number of impressive submissions from the community, and will be sending a prize to a few runners-up as recognition for their work (be sure to check your emails). Thank you to everyone who took the time to dream up their ultimate version of Phone (2a). We received over 400 submissions!
So, what’s next? There are still three stages left of the Community Edition Project: Wallpaper Design, Packaging Design and the Creative Campaign.
Stage 2: Wallpaper Design begins on 2 May so stay tuned for the full brief!
Are you a seasoned artist or graphic designer who will use Kenta and Astrid’s design as inspiration for your submission? Will this be the first time you’ve designed a wallpaper?
I hope you’ll join us in congratulating our winners! 🤩
