Hello all. I’m new to the Nothing Community. Although I do own a Nothing Phone (1) I bought it to ‘test out’ months before getting their new flagship. But I use a Google Pixel 9 Pro XL as my main phone. Now the Nothing Phone (3) is here, I’m happy to say it ticks all the boxes for me.
A lot of people are complaining about the choice of chipset, which I don’t understand. The Snapdragon 8s Gen 4 outperforms Google’s Tensor G4 considerably - and I paid £1200 for the Pixel 9 Pro XL on release. Yet no-one seems to moan about that. I’ve read a few comments that people will be jumping ship to a Pixel, which to me is taking a step back in hardware for an increased price.
And I know a lot of people are saying you get more for your money with a Samsung or an Oppo or a Oneplus or a Poco, - yes, you probably do, but then you have to tolerate bloatware and buggy operating systems on all of these phones. I like the simplicity of Nothing OS, but then I’m not dependant on my phone in order to get through life.
Then there’s the price. I know there’s a lot of people complaining about the price in India, and I’m certainly not in a position to comment on that, but I do think the highish price can be blamed on because it was developed in the UK. There will be much higher wages and higher taxes, and these do contribute to the higher sale price unfortunately. If it was totally created in China, then it probably will be more like £4-500 I would imagine.
I DO like the new design. At first glance, the ill-positioned camera lens did put me off a bit, but I certainly don’t mind it now. But it will be interesting to see how case-makers work around this. I’ll be interested to see how Nothing’s own phone cases look (I hope one has a mag-safe compatible ring on one of them!)
I like the new glyph. To me, that makes much more sense to go in the small screen direction than to redo the flashing lights on the back. While they made me smile on the Nothing (1), I will get more use out of the new Glyph Interface, and it will be exciting to see what developers make of it. I’d love to be able to communicate with ChatGPT via the Glyph interface - like seeing a waveform of it speaking.
Speaking of which, there’s a lot of mention of ChatGPT being ‘baked in’ to the OS - and I’m really excited to see how this will turn out. I would love to see ChatGPT to replace Gemini. I’m not sure how it would be able to control things like calendars, reminders and other phone-specific tasks, but I would love to see it working like that.
It seems Nothing can’t win. They really do design things that are different and people get upset. If they stuck to the same designs as every other manufacturer, then people couldn’t care less. Nothing isn’t about being the same as everyone else, and I for one am looking forward to trying out their new device as a permanent fixture in my life.
Oh, and if Nothing persistently listened to community feedback, then they’d end up building Homer Simpson’s car.
Bye!
