Hey everyone, Iāve been using the 4.0 Open Beta for a while now on my Nothing Phone 2 and hereās my detailed feedback.
š Positives
1. Essential Apps & Spectacular Widgets
This is honestly one of the highlights of 4.0. The widgets feel so fresh and creative ā exactly the kind of fun innovation only Nothing could pull off. Right now, weāre restricted to creating Widgets and Camera Presets, but in the future it looks like weāll be able to create full apps too. Super excited for that!
2. Extra Dark Mode
Perfect for anyone who prefers pitch-dark mode. Looks clean and easy on the eyes.
3. Notification Panel Customisation
Definitely improved compared to before. The new layout feels more polished.
4. Faster App Opening Speed
Apps launch noticeably faster now. Good performance boost.
5. App Optimisation Option
Thereās a dedicated option in settings to optimise all apps for smoother performance. Nice addition.
6. Intelligence Tool
This allows direct communication with AI apps. Note: currently, AI usage is only available on Nothing Phone (3).
7. Camera App Improvements
The UI has been slightly refreshed, and you can now import camera presets created in Playground Nothing ā or create your own custom ones. Another big thumbs up!
ā ļø Negatives
1. Widget Removal Bug
When you remove a widget from the home screen, a toast message āItem removedā shows up at the bottom. The problem is: until that message disappears (about 2 seconds), you canāt switch apps or use gestures. It interrupts the smooth flow of multitasking.
2. Notification Panel Colour Issue
Earlier, when you toggled something (like mobile data), it turned red. Now it turns white, which is way too bright, especially in Extra Dark Mode. Suggestion: please allow us to customise the toggle colours.
3. Overhyped Updates
Some features feel smaller than expected compared to the hype.
4. Missing Features in Gallery
Would love to see features like Magic Eraser and more advanced editing tools in Nothingās own Gallery app.
5. Limited AOD Customisation
AOD is still very basic. Even if itās black & white, at least give users more personalisation like OxygenOS does. Considering Nothingās creative DNA, AOD should reflect that. Right now, it feels boring.
6. Dot Matrix Font Restriction
This font is currently only available in Settings and the headings. Please let us apply it system-wide for a more consistent Nothing feel.
7. Widget Limitations
Right now, widgets are limited. Please allow users to add as many as they want.
š Current Bugs
Main one spotted so far: App switching gets blocked for ~2 seconds after removing a widget.
Will update and share more bugs as I find them.

Final Thoughts
Overall, Nothing OS 4.0 brings some truly creative and refreshing ideas ā especially with widgets, Extra Dark Mode, and the improved camera presets. But there are still areas where it feels limited or underdeveloped (AOD, font customisation, notification colours). If Nothing can polish these rough edges, 4.0 could easily become one of the most exciting Android skins out there.
