Great work! Your concept seems quite doable.

If Nothing team makes a laptop: the only right way would be to go non-windows non-apple non-google way.

How would their distro look and feel? It has to be beginner friendly, so I’m guessing probably something Debian based. With GNOME or preferably CINNAMON. I prefer both of their defaults to KDE, Of course all of them offer so much in terms of customisation.

Maybe taking a peek into what VanillaOS has done on Debian base and go from there.

Come on, Nothing team, give us a Linux laptop with your custom OS! ☺

  • My cup of tea:

    1. An option to shuffle the number-pad whenever you want to unlock your phone with a PIN.
    2. The ability to rename apps in the app-drawer.
    3. The ability to chose an icon from icon themes (either default or user-installed) for each app individually. Some custom launchers have that feature (Niagara Launcher at least).
    4. The ability to set charging speed to either normal or quick charge.

None of those settings should be hard to include since some of them are already included in “lineageOS”, others are available in some custom launchers.

About 2. and 3.: I use K-9 Mail form mailing services on my phone. I hate the name: I’d rather name it just “Mail”. I don’t like the icon: give me an option to choose whichever icon from whichever icon-theme I have installed on my phone.

  • Honestly, device I enjoyed holding the most is the original iPhone SE I had for a couple of months. I know, silly. But I miss the “everything-reachable-with-my-thumb” - and I have above average hand size. Had it been an Android phone with better battery life, I’d use it for longer.

The biggest daily driver for me so far was 5,9″. And since there are no more “small” phones that interest me, I just give up. For me, the difference between 6,3″ and 6,7″ is not big enough to grab the smaller one just because it is more compact.

  • Wow. I didn’t know blloc and nothing are connected. Great interview!

I remember giving ratio/blloc launcher a try a couple of years ago. It didn’t stick: I guess I was just too lazy to actually do the initial customisation to tailor the UI and UX to my preferences. I am not a Social Media user (at least not on my mobile device) so it did not make that much of a sense from a “digital-detox” perspective. But I liked the new approach to using an android smartphone. And I also remember there was a ton of trackers and permissions that you had to agree with - but I guess that is needed in order to have all the functionalities.

Right now I am waiting for my first Nothing Phone to arrive and I cannot wait to start using it!
