Nothing Phone (2) - Software Update Policy

I am planning on buying the Nothing phone (2) soon but I found out that it only has 3 years of software updates and 4 years of security updates. And I was wondering if that means that it will stop at Android 16 for everyone or will it stop 3 years after I bought it. (for example from Android 14 to Android 17) Also when I buy the phone will I find the software it was released with initially or the latest one?

I almost went with the Motorola Edge 50 Neo as they now get 5 years of Android updates. The CMF1 gets only two years, but I’ll switch to custom ROM or some NOTHING OS hack by then perhaps.

NOTHING is quite poor in all price brackets with length of updates. Samsung A15 gets 5 years of patches and 4 years of updates as an examples.

However, NOTHING is more interesting and a CheapMoFO (CMF) so I know who I’m getting into bed with.

Anonymous717 As mentioned the phone should be replaced if it doesn’t perform as well as before. of course a new released phone will be better than an old phone. But the support period starts with the release of the phone, that is, even if the phone will be new from the store, in the near future (1-2 years) it will still need to be replaced while phone is completely fine

coff1n I’am totally agree with you, but i meant that you need to buy the phone when it releases to the market or in maximum period of half year after the release.

circle674 I’m user of nothing phone 2, Better go with nothing 2a community edition (Glow) considering updates too and worth buying it (in my opinion).

If that is the case, Nothing will become Nothing. iPhone and Samsung flagship phone brands became valuable because of their lengthy software and security updates - 6-7 years. If Nothing sticks to 3 years only of software and security updates, they will literally become nothing.

Nothing should revise their software update policy. They should atleast offer 4+5 years of support for it’s flagship phones, like Phone 2.

Currently Nothing promised to support its devices for 3+4 years. But for phone 2, it is a premium device, they charged premium for it also. So Phone 2 should get 4+5 years of support.

After using the Nothing phone 2 for over the last 10 months it really is buggy and cameras are still terrible since day one .. it would of been nice to see the Nothing team really go in on tuning and focusing on better updates for the devices that are out rather than release new devices , it seems they spend most of the time avoiding it and post random BS content on social medias ..

SPICER.09 I’ve had a 2a since December and not suffered one bug with the OS. Cameras aren’t phenomenal, but for £310, I wasn’t expecting the world.

dylanknowsnothing yeah that’s good hopefully yours stays that way , my NP2 was fine but as a few months past I noticed it to get worse in some area’s, the performance ,storage and connectivity have been great but the camera and display is the downside to this device

Moustafa true that new tech is created but doesn’t mean it’s necessary for every day life and we must have it , difference between wants and needs .. phones are advancing for profit not offering is a great deal more , if it can call , message check emails access the internet, take quality images what more do you want , there isn’t any apps out there or games that require all this power. they’re trying to sell the Ai useless garbage .. personally I think it’s a better option to keep a phone for more than 4 years and get quality updates..

its like a flagship phone also from a new company which dont have many mid range phones like Samsung and xiaomi.its a pitty for this amazing phone

The NP(2) was released mid 2023, the 3 years of Android updates apply from then, as per the Nothing website:

3 years of Android updates

4 years of security patches every 2 months

I don’t think nothing cares about nothing phone 2 as this is there failed product and they don’t want to put effort on old device as user like me waiting for camera and battery improvements from years but no response or improvement I feel they make camera more worse

Personally, I think Nothing OS updates are like a joke.The Phone (2) - their latest flagship (not counting the released Phone (3)) - still hasn’t gotten the update, *for example* while the Phone (2a) plus got it Quite a long time ago. Hell, even the old Phone (1) is running the new version.

I hope the devs have some sort of explanation for this - and that whenever this update finally lands, it actually brings something worthwhile to justify the wait. Because so far, even when updates do roll out, they’re hardly groundbreaking.

Treating your own (not even that old) flagships like this is a surefire way to kill any goodwill left for the brand. Keep pumping out budget phones, give them all the attention, and you’ll end up like LG - with only a handful of geeks still caring about your devices. Honestly, even now barely anyone knows you lot exist. And no, being a young company isn’t an excuse - it’s just not.

I don’t want to end up disappointed in Nothing, though. You’re one of the few brands actually trying something different, and let’s be real - you could have a proper future.

It’s already being treated as a second rate device despite having like 50% better performance and costing twice as much as the 3a series at launch, let alone the CMF phones.

The phone (1) and (2) received updates but the (1) still lacks camera preset widgets and as well as the (2) is still missing custom LUTs for example.

Why would anyone want to spend money on their best phones if they’re going to release budget models a couple months later that get more features and earlier.

And now they even screwed up the hardware bang for your buck aspect on their latest phone. I expect it’s not selling well but for the people that were gullible enough to purchase it I hope that won’t dissuade Nothing even more from offering quality long term software support on that device. They can offer 5 years of updates all they want but if that means cutting corners on the features included it’s next to meaningless. If the rumors about a 3T/lite model are anything to go by it seems Nothing hasn’t learned their lesson. I predict disappointed phone (3) owners 2 to 3 years from now.
